The Black Puddle Queen, one of the most malevolent and haunting villains from Courage the Cowardly Dog. From Greek to Norse to even Celtic mythology, the idea of a man-eating sea beast disguised as a beautiful aquatic maiden has been a strong and terrifying legend passed down through the generations, and in the Courage series, all these legends have spawned from her and her alone. The Black Puddle Queen appears before men and lures them into her clutches with her powerful charm, before consuming them in a sacrifice to her very glory, dumping the bones of her victims in her underwater lair.
The Black Puddle Queen is strong enough to damage Courage with her physical attacks, dent the border between two spatial dimensions with a headbutt, and endure a hit from Courage’s full powered terrified scream, this is a more powerful version of the same terrified scream that Courage used to shatter the entire sun to pieces, giving her Large Star Level+ strength and durability. She is also able to completely outswim Courage in water and score hits on him even on land. Courage’s physical speed is enough to run around the sun in seconds casually and keep up with The Shadow who was able to fly into another starsystem at 135 million C, his reaction speed on the other hand has let him pilot spaceships traveling billions of times light, and the Queen must be similar to this.
As the Queen of The Black Puddle, all of her best abilities revolve around water. First and foremost the Queen has her own large underwater pocket dimension, of which she can enter and exit at will via creating portals to other dimensions out of literally any source of water that exists in that world. She can also drag victims into her black water dimension via making portals through any existing water source.
Not only this, but The Black Water Queen can also see through any water source in other dimensions, allowing her to easily remotely spy and gather intel on her foes by watching and listening to them through any nearby water source. The Black Puddle Queen has Hydrokinesis, able to possess and control any water sources, this includes manipulating the moisture in the air to summon a rainstorm, drenching the area and giving her powers a massive boost in effectiveness, with many more access points.
She is also able to transform her body into Water, Ice or Steam, gaining logia intangibility from attacks and the ability to travel through obstacles and dissipate into her surroundings. This also allows her to manipulate her own physical form, gaining both Size Manipulation and Shapeshifting.
But her deadliest ability is to manipulate the water’s light refraction allowing it to reflect illusions, she can throw her possessed water onto her victims and put their mind into a cloudy hypnotic trance, completely at her mercy.
The Queen’s physical form is fully amphibious, capable of breathing on land and underwater, as well as being able to swim at super fast rates, see clearly in water and air, and transform into her true Bestial form, which gives her a massive power boost alongside sharp claws and a giant jaw full of teeth to consume her victims in one gulp. She has enough stamina to swim and dance all night without tiring and is able to attack with all sorts of sea life weaponry like jellyfish and clams. She's also smart enough to use advanced weapons like nuclear missiles.
As far as weaknesses go, The Black Puddle Queen’s abilities rely on her manipulating preexisting moisture, even with her storm creation she cannot make water from nothing a character who could destroy the surrounding moisture or move the fight to a moisture free environment would be able to cut her off from most of her abilities.

So how does she do in other verses?
In DC Comics The Black Puddle Queen would rank among the metahumans, a Mid Tier in the Justice League and a high tier in the Teen Titans. Her physical Stats would allow her to compete with powerhouses like Donna Troy and Starfire, and while it is likely they would defeat her in a purely physical fight, her power variety would give her a notable leg up on them. She would have an interesting fight against foes like Booster Gold, as while in theory his forcefield Should protect him from her powers, she could potentially get around it by attacking him through his own bodily fluids. While its obvious she wouldn’t be able to defeat more powerful characters like Raven or Martian Manhunter, one person I think would be able to do well against her is Aquaman, due to his ability to dominate her mind as she is still but a sea creature.
In the Xiaolin Showdown universe, The Black Puddle Queen would be a massive threat significantly above their own sea demon to be sure, and comparable to the most powerful villain in the entire series, Wuya. While it's debatable she could defeat Wuya in a straight up fight thanks to Wuya’s superior hax abilities, she would clearly be able to stop powerful villains like Chase Young and Hannibal Bean, and would actually be extra effective on the Xiaolin Dragon of Water, Omi, who we know is quite susceptible to female temptresses. One person I think would be well equipped against her however is Kimiko, as her fire powers would be able to dry up all the surrounding water and leave her without most of her broken powers, even with her high stats it is possible to defeat her with several Wu.
In The Powerpuff Girls, The Black Puddle Queen would be able to compete with the major heroes and villains in physical might, and while her speed is not very impressive by comparison, she has a larger arsenal of powers than the majority of characters in the series. With her succubus-like nature The Black Puddle Queen would occupy a similar role to the villain Sedusa, albeit significantly more dangerous with her near everpresent nature. With her logia she could easily take tons of hits without going down, or brainwash characters like The Rowdyruff Boys or Mojo to fight on her behalf. That said I’m still confident the Girls could stop her.
In the Bayonetta series the Black Puddle Queen would be a massive threat with her power and speed being somewhat better than most of the top tier characters, and as water still exists in every dimension within Bayonetta, The queen should have no trouble traveling to whatever dimension the witches, demons and angels decide to fight her on to take them down. It would take many powerful characters working together to defeat her in a head-on fight but they do have win conditions, for example, The Queen has no counter to Witch Time, so if they would freeze her in time and then hit her with a soul destroying weapon it should be a GG.
Lastly in Cartoon Network’s other Premier Horror Cartoon, Billy and Mandy, The Queen would rank as a Mid Tier Monster, comparable to foes like The Boogeyman, The Spider Queen and Nergal in terms of power and hax abilities. She would be able to overcome a lot of hits from powerful characters thanks to her Logia abilities, and her ability to appear out of any water source would be especially effective on the verses’ own mermaids. That being said her mind hax is nothing new to the verse and is really weak by comparison, if she were to show up on Earth and Mandy was aware of her she would be quickly mind dominated so she would have to play this stealthy. A fight between her and the other Mid Level Villains could really go either way, as all of them are capable of traveling to other dimensions and tend to possess at least one hax that could kill her, meanwhile she has better speed and stealth abilities.
Excellent blog Thor! Black Puddle Queen was probably my favorite villain from Courage. I have an affinity for water themed villains due to the mystical and otherworldly feel of the deep ocean, as well as for seductress type villainess (possibly due to their prevalence in magical girl series). I thought she had a really strong presence, and wish there was more eps around her (though I guess that could ruin the mystique).
ReplyDeleteI thought your analysis was really good, I mentally had Courage-verse at star level and some vague mftl based on prior discussion and this really clarified things I thought. Her ability to appear in any water sounds extremely deadly when you consider just how prevalent it is. 3/4th the world's surface, as well as every tear and sweat drop. Reminds me of Mirror Master.
Mind manipulation is well is a nifty ability to have and it really strikes that sweet spot of being simple enough for easy conveyance, able to be shown in children's medium, yet adult enough to have complexity and a strong visceral sense to it. It especially fits for seductress types and especially especially for water-themed ones given classical siren themes. I like mythology and I appreciated the mythological references.
I also really liked the verses used! The first four verses are all some of my favorites, and I think you were correct in your placements. It would be really interesting to see Kimiko with some Wu or a few of the Bayo high tiers fight the Black Puddle Queen.
Great how they compare, looking forward to next one!
Awesome blog Thor! I sometimes forget how much I love the different villains from Courage, ranging from creepy to cunning. Black Puddle Queen is a really cool character and a great choice for a villain to represent Courage in a “How they compare” blog. You laid out all her abilities really well I think and gave explanation of her stats and what she scales to (To think Courage’s screams are that powerful :P). I thought you chose the perfect verses to to compare her in as well, from fellow Cartoon Network series to Bayonetta, which has it’s own witch characters, as well DC comics (which feels almost obligatory in these blogs alongside Marvel Comics :P). It is surprising how well she would do in many of these verses such as Xiaolin Showdown, Bayonetta, and PowerPuff Girls. It just goes to show that Courage villains are not to be trifled with. Even then though, even the Queen can’t be that overpowered in powerful verses such as DC Comics and Billy & Mandy, the latter of which has its own impressive horror rogue gallery. Great Job; very well written blog.
ReplyDeleteQueen from the Black Lagoon...er, Puddle. This gal monster takes me back. Well, kinda. I really need to refresh my memory on her because I don't remember much other than enjoying her episodes. Luckily, this blog did exactly that, and more! I love the idea of primeval mythical creatures spreading stories across the planet and its cultures, all tracing back to one legendary horror that preys on a universal fear. Right out of the gate her stats are super scary! I'm well aware of how strong Courage's screams are, so anyone who's tougher than that is a true force to be reckoned with.
ReplyDeleteBut being a beatstick of high numbers isn't enough to be THAT interesting. And happily, it's just the tip of the iceberg sitting in a black ocean. The presence and awareness water gives the Queen is absolutely terrifying. She may very well be one of the deadliest and most powerful water manipulators I've ever heard of. The fact that she can bring water into places where there isn't much with her storm/rain creation is busted. Not that that's necessary most of the time; moisture is so much more present than people normally think. In fact, almost any living thing is pretty screwed against her given water being inextricably tied with life itself. I love me some good body horror as you know, and being able to control people's bodily fluids brings a huge host of gruesome possibilities! And being able to use water to affect the mind itself? The Queen has all the makings of a great villain, not just a mindless monster, and you did a great job of showcasing her in all her dark glory.
And then you went and unleashed her on several unsuspecting series. Delicious! DC is always a great measuring stick given its wide variety of tiers and characters. Mid tier for JL is very respectable, and I especially liked how you brought up Aquaman.
Xiaolin Showdown's a fun choice, I like the sound of Kimiko. The Black Puddle Queen seems quite strong for this verse, and you've made me curious as to who would win between her and the big bad of this verse. Keeping things cartoony, I really like her as a PPG villain. I can imagine the BPQ messing with Townsville's water supply and sewers, brainwashing and luring men away until the girls stepped in.
The Queen of the Black Puddle's humanoid design gives me major witch vibes, so it's fitting you put her up against the Bayo-verse. Really good catch noting her complete lack of defense against time manipulation; Witch Time sure is a silver bullet! Still deadly as heck to the poor inhabitants of this place though, with the sheer versatility the Queen's water manipulation affords her.
And you saved the best for last, Billy and Mandy! This monster would fit in brilliantly here! Though that's sort of to her disadvantage, heh. It really goes to show how scary and powerful this verse is when the dreaded Queen of the Black Puddle is around a mid tier threat :P Great blog bro, I think it's important you get it out there how scary Courage's rogues gallery can be! And thanks for a fun trip down Memory Lane.
