How They Compare: The Evil Wizard (Castle Crashers)

The Evil Wizard is the final boss and main villain of the Castle Crashers series and one of the most Terrifying antagonists in the entire Behemoth franchise. The Evil Wizard is a powerful demonic sorcerer bent on conquering the entire planet through means of manipulation of kingdoms, creating vast armies of millions of monsters, and capturing all the power crystals in order to reflect his dark powers over the planet, forever staining the world in suffering and despair. He is a violent and sadistic being of destruction, thought to be responsible for billions of deaths and the torture of whole civilizations just because he felt like it, and if no one stops him, the world will be next.

The Evil Wizard’s power is so great, he was able to create a massive storm across the entire horizon, with winds so strong it ripped his large fortress out of the ground and suspended it in the air. He was able to maintain this storm as he fought against all 4 castle crashers at once, each of which is capable of violently shaking an entire mountain range with a single strike, and he could take more of their strikes than any 3 other bosses in the game combined, putting his power in the Hundreds of Gigatons of TNT.

The Castle Crashers are also capable of running faster than lightning attacks, meteors and ships capable of traveling from the United States to Russia in seconds, putting the Evil Wizard’s speed at hundreds of times the speed of sound.

The Evil Wizard is an extremely intelligent manipulator who has amassed an army of millions and numerous powerful allies, but more than anything he is known for his incredible magic prowess. His most famous ability is his potent Telekinesis which is so strong he is able to create massive weather events like hurricanes and tornadoes, as well as allow him to do the more traditional trick of moving objects with his mind. The Wizard can use his Telekinesis to control every object around him, allowing him to levitate and fly, slam objects into his foes no matter where they run, and pull weapons and objects into his possession.

The Evil Wizard also has Electrokinesis to shock the living hell outta his foes, the Beefy Blast that can boost the strength and durability of himself and his allies, and his personal magic Umbrakinesis. Umbrakinesis is considered a Non-Elemental magic, meaning it cannot be resisted through any special purposes and harms everyone the same. With Umbrakinesis, The Evil Wizard can make explosive waves of damaging darkness, jump to incredible heights with Dark Wall, and fire damaging Darkness projectiles that explode on contact.

For Defenses, The Evil Wizard can summon a blue Force Field around himself, which perfectly shields him from all physical attacks while still allowing him to attack back, the downside being all Magical Attacks will pass right through this. He also has his red Anti-Magic Field, which essentially does the opposite, it perfectly shields him from all magic attacks but physical attacks pass right through, he cannot use both at the same time.

Because The Evil Wizard is kinda an emo, he also has a couple Demonic Forms he can shift into, the first of which is known as the Balloon Form, which essentially turns him into a living bomb, floating above the battlefield and raining down Aerokinetic projectiles, which explode into dozens of smaller Air Attacks. The Second of which, is the much more impressive Spider Demon form, which is a flying 8 armed giant monster covered in enormous stingers. The Spider Demon also has the ability to birth demonic henchmen known as Cultists, Cultists are mindless, demonic beings of destruction and some of the toughest enemies in the game, flatly immune to magic and equipped with powerful weapons and Umbrakinesis. The Spider Demon can summon whole groups of these creatures.

The Evil Wizards primary weapon is called The Demon Sword, a powerful hellish blade that gives the wielder an 8% increase in strength, speed and magic just by holding it. This sword grants the user Pyrokinetic powers, it is able to shoot streams of fire with a single slash, allow you to fly through the air as a flaming buzzsaw, and summon waves of meteors from space to divebomb his opponents.

So how does he do in other verses?

In the Marvel Series, The Evil Wizard would be a powerful and versatile foe among the street level characters, being stronger and more durable than Spider-Man, The Defenders and the majority of The X-Men. His Anti-Magic Field would essentially guarantee a win against any comparable magic users in the series, his telekinesis could easily disarm numerous heroes and villains of their more advanced weaponry, and his ability to spawn his own henchmen can make him have a quick rise to power, particularly if he teamed up with one of the evil organizations like AIM or Hydra. Generally It would take someone like Iron Man or greater to defeat him head on.

In The Legend of Zelda, The Evil Wizard would in most cases be one of the top tier villains, fitting best into games like Twilight Princess, Wind Waker and Ocarina of Time. He would be flatly above powerful characters like Midna and Ezlo, and directly comparable to Ganondorf Dragmire himself in these games, and would almost certainly start an evil faction war with the desert warlock, who would win this fight however would depend on how they play it, as the Evil Wizards aggressive attack variety could allow him to overwhelm Ganon, yet Ganon could easily BRF him to another dimension or something if he can outsmart him. One thing that could prove a challenge for him though are the evil destroying weapons in the verse, such as The Master Sword, Light Arrows or the Sage Sword all of which would probably be more effective on The Evil Wizard than they would Ganon himself.

In Magic Knight Rayearth, The Evil Wizard would be a massive physical threat, having strength higher than most of the regular cast combined and surpassing even the likes of Master Mage Clef in terms of magical destructive capacity. Imagine if you had a dark spellcaster figure like Zagato, but made him as evil as Debonaire and you will see how scary he would be. He would undoubtedly attempt to corrupt the Pillar of Cephiro to twist the world to his sadistic will.

The Evil Wizard has several advantages here, his telekinesis and anti-magic fields would be the most notable as it could counter a lot of the spells and weapons this verse can throw at him. That said he would be far from unstoppable, characters in this verse have reaction speed outright superior to his movement speed, and he would not be able to resist hax abilities found in the verse like Caldina’s Mind Control and Illusions, or Zagato’s transmutation for instance. But past that the verse has Lantis, who not only would be strong enough to fight him head on, but given he is a master of physical combat AND Magic, he is essentially this verse’s Castle Crasher equivalent, meaning there's no way he could properly defend against him.

Not to mention there's tons of things in Season 2 that can stop him, such as The Rune Gods, Eagle Vision and Lady Aska.

In the Devil May Cry series, The Evil Wizard would be a powerful and versatile foe, the equivalent of a final boss in most of the earlier games, and roughly as strong and fast as Mundus, who he would almost certainly attempt to ally himself with and help him to try and bring forth Qliphoth, the great Hell Tree. The Wizard would be extremely dangerous in a fight, especially with his telekinesis being able to disarm his foes in a verse that relies so heavily on its special magic weaponry. He would certainly defeat characters like Lady, Trish and even Nero, though he would still not be able to stop big name characters like Dante and Vergil even if he did take away their weapons. It's also quite possible he could lose to characters less powerful than him, due to hax like Space Time manipulation or Mind Control.

Lastly in the Magicka verse, The Evil Wizard would be a potent boss character to fight. He would be a massive threat to the realm of Midgard with his manipulation and ability to summon armies, Wizards would absolutely need to be deployed to stop him. In that event he would be an extremely difficult boss fight, having stats comparable to a Yeti and the power variety almost as large as The Wizards themselves, including several elemental powers they have, an Anti Magic force field to guard him from almost all of their powers, and telekinesis which potentially could crush them at a distance. Unless it was Magicka 2 where it's basically impossible to beat a group of wizards, it would be super difficult to bring him down, they’d essentially need to block his attack with their own force fields and use a Magicka like Summon Death. That said, he wouldn’t be the hardest boss in Magicka as someone like Cthulhu would be undefeatable to The Evil Wizard.

  1. This wizard really does seem to be a surprisingly twisted figure for a verse that seems relatively cheery like CC. Hot only is his personality sadistic and vile, but his powers are common abilities at their darkness; darkness manipulation that actually destroys things, fire manipulation that turns you into a buzzsaw resembling Hellfire, summoning that lets you create demonic minions. I'm very glad the Castle Crashers were able to beat him, as he's quite the menacing figure.

I thought your analyses were pretty good! Him being able to match big name characters in LOZ and DMC like Ganondorf and Mundus really cemenents him as final boss status and his level of power. That his evil is even notable in verses that have demons and the embodiment of malice really cements his villainous status as well. His telekinesis seemed to come up a lot, which makes sense. I've said before it's an underrated power and in every single one of these sections, his ability to telekinetically disarm people of objects granting them their powers is a really helpful ability.

I was particularly happy to see both Magic Knight Rayearth and Magicka in this, two series that are both in my top 10. Magicka's section I definitely understood as we made the Magicka Wizards vs Castle Crashers thing and he'd definitely be a threat to the "peaceful" land of Midgard. I am surprised you didn't mention him potentially telekinetically grabbing the Magicka staves which they use to cast magic though that might have been implied with him using telekinesis against them. He'd definitely be master wizard tier, around the level of someone like Vlad, Grimnir, or Lok though I agree I can't see him beating someone like Assatur or Cthulhu. Your analysis of him in Magic Knight Rayearth was even better. With even the great mage Guru Clef only creating a megaton level blast, he would definitely be a massive threat to anyone without a spirit or mech to fight him in. I loved the note you made that Lantis is both a physical and magical threat making him akin to the Castle Crashers and so would be able to beat the Evil Wizard, when combined with his higher power. It was one of those observations that seems so obvious when said but I know I wouldn't think to say without weeks of thinking about it.

If you ever want to make a matchup with this guy, you could do it against Ede Ee from Bastard!! It seems like it would be a thematic and fair fight.

  2. Always nice to see you do a “How they Compare” blog! This is a villain I honestly wouldn’t expect of Castle Crashers given my initial vibe I received from the series. Even if his army did a lot of the work, the fact he has BILLIONS of deaths under his belt is absolutely nuts! He has a pretty neat skill set like his context sensitive force fields and darkness blasts. I also found the ways he uses his telekinesis pretty cool, with him using it to disarm opponents and manipulate the weather.

It is an interesting selection of verses you chose. Once again I like seeing the niche he would fill in various series like how he would probably team up with Mundus to summon the Qliphoth or how he would probably start a faction war against Ganondorf. I It would be pretty cool to see him as the final boss in a Devil May Cry game (also interesting to see how a Beat Em Up character would do in a Hack N Slash video game series). I fully expected Magicka to be here, but it is impressive that he would do so well against a magic centered verse. I like the attention to detail in the Zelda series description in showing he would most likely be stronger in Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, and Ocarina in Time (in fact he sounds like an even more evil villain than Ganondorf, which means the thing about the light arrows is pretty logical). The way you likened him to Landis from Magic Knight Rayearth was also a neat comparison that makes a lot of sense.

  3. So is his legal first name The, or Evil, or what? Just messin' with ya (though I am a bit curious). A classic name for a villain of this sort, though this demonic lil guy's packing his share of surprises. The first one that comes to mind is his sheer amount of health. Wizards are supposed to be frail, scrawny little things, you know? Not this guy. I remember reading your Castle Crashers blog and those dudes were physical powerhouses. To exceed them while still specializing in magic is quite the feat. Evil Wizard's Umbrakinesis is my favorite power of his, I love any sort of attack that can just ignore everything, though special mention to his excellent applications of the more common telekinesis, and his cool Spider Demon form that can create minions that sound like proper threats in their own right. Though my favorite thing in his entire kit is actually his equipment, specifically the Demon Sword! I want one; I love swords and fire powers, and buzzsaws and meteors! It just shot very high up on my list of favorite fantasy weapons.

Comic books are a great benchmark, makes sense you're starting off by comparing the Evil Wizard to Marvel. I was impressed by the number of superheroes he'd be a terror to; sounds like he could fit right in! Anti-magic sure helps a lot, and this guy even has anti-physical too! Crashing castles in Hyrule is a neat choice too, and I like how you explored what would happen with the Evil Wizard sharing a world with Ganondorf. Sounds like a hero will need to emerge if a war between two dark lords breaks out.

Going back to what I first mentioned about the Evil Wizard having such high physical stats for a mage, I see that comes into play when he gets compared to the magical knights of Ciphero. Though as a Link will rise to oppose a Ganon in the previous verse, you found MKR's own Castle Crasher in Lantis. Very cool. And anti-magic continues to be OP here. Speaking of cool, DMC was a very unexpected choice. Don't get me wrong though, it's a welcome one! I thought it very astute of you to exploit that verse's reliance on weapons with Evil Wizard's mastery of telekinesis, well done!

And finally, what could be more perfect than Magicka? I still remember that collab blog you made with Imp, really amazing stuff. If anyone reading this comment hasn't read Castle Crashers vs Magicka Wizards, go do it! The Evil Wizard sounds like a truly challenging foe for normal wizards and this blog makes me wish someone would mod this fight into the game as a bonus boss. He'd look good with a 3D model too. Sounds like Magicka 2 really upped the ante, so it'd need to be the first game, but still! I'm glad you chose this verse to end the blog on, as not only is it the most thematically appropriate, but I think it's the comparison that best allows the Evil Wizard to shine as darkly as he can. Thanks for the blog!
