Death Battle Analysis: Franny K. Stein

Happy Halloween all you slime covered beasts and furry creatures! For those of you that know me, you know Halloween is my favorite Holiday, it’s a time where my love of Horror is in full swing and I dive deep into Horror Movies and Decorating and going to Haunted Houses and all that stuff. But something I really get nostalgic for is not just the scary terrifying side of Halloween, but also the more Fun and Lighthearted Spooky side of Halloween. Things like animated halloween specials, games like Monster Lab, and of course, something I was a huge fan of, Spooky Children's Books that captured my Imagination and that brings us to our topic today! Franny K. Stein is a long series of children’s books from the early 2000s in the same vein as Captain Underpants and Wayside, and while I liked those series, as you might imagine this one was my clear favorite! The Series is Crazy, Funny and Spooky and has so much Heart, yet has ended up being much more obscure by comparison. So on this Halloween, I wanted to dig up this dark gem from the crypt and give it a rare spotlight as we examine Franny K. Stein!

Background:

In a nice quiet suburban neighborhood, on the pleasant road of Daffodil Street, sits a bright and cheery pink house with purple shutters that is home to the Stein Family. The Stein family is a perfectly normal, run of the mill nuclear family with nothing strange or bizarre going on whatsoever, all but one of them at least…

For at the top of this house out a circular window sits an incredible Laboratory where strange and grotesque things happen, the Mad Science Lab of one Francine Kissypie “Franny K.” Stein.

Ever since she was a baby, Franny had one peculiar interest above all else, the art of Mad Science. Everything from Mutants to Robots to Cryptids to the Paranormal, it was all fascinating to her and spurred her on to be the greatest Mad Scientist the world had ever seen.

Franny’s Parents tried to raise her the same as every other kid, get her into things that are more normal for girls to me into, thinking this Horror and Science thing is probably just a phase, but despite their best efforts, this was here to stay. Labcoats were her fashion sense, Hungarian pumpkin goulash tasted way better than Peanut-Butter and Jellies, and who needs video games when you can inject Mantis’s with human DNA?

See Franny’s an incredibly intelligent girl who has a knack for invention, often making lots of devices and experiments and monsters that, lets just say, her parents and little brother found a bit on the unsettling side. But eventually they came to accept this is who Franny is, and they love Franny inside and out, and came around to supporting her interests.

You see, despite the interest in Mad Science, Franny was never a bad girl, and had no desire to take over the world or anything cliche like that. Franny believes that science is a force for good, she’s just willing to go into the sides of it that most people are afraid to!

But things all changed when Franny was met with having to face the greatest evil known to man, having to attend Elementary school. Franny understandably had a hard time fitting in at first. She was smart and strong willed but also different from everyone else in a lot of obvious ways. Basically all the other girls and boys were afraid of her.

Like any good scientist, the inability for Franny to make friends pushed her to seek a solution. Against her teacher Miss Shelly’s wishes, she conducted an experiment to conform to what is normal to try and win the kids over. This actually worked, and got the kids to not be so afraid of her, but Franny wasn’t being herself, and when things got outta hand with some insane pumpkinheaded Fiend kidnapping the treacher King Kong style, Franny had to go full Mad Scientist mode to save the day!

Finally forced to expose her true colors to the classmates, they two understood exactly who she was, and deeper, she wasn’t someone to be feared, for while she may be a Mad Scientist, she's still someone who can be a kindhearted friend. Since then, Franny has continued on, going on crazy science adventures. She's battled monsters, and killer robots and saved the world more than once. With the support of her friends and family, Franny K. Stein is the Mad Scientist who can do anything.

Personality:

Franny is a very strong willed, creative, and ambitious girl who constantly works hard on her scientific projects and absolutely loves what she does. Franny is driven, Tough as Nails and brave to a fault, going on record saying she Fears no Death. She has a nerve that can quell huge crowds of screaming children and stop a monster in their tracks with a look. Franny’s a fan of everything scary and icky that people normally don’t like or pay heed to, showing it the love it needs the way others won’t. She's got some anti-social tendencies, but like every one of her flaws she tries hard every day to get better at them and progressively became more open as things went on.

  

Franny likes playing with her Dog, Igor, Pumpkin Goulash, Experimenting, learning new things, getting praised, wrangling spiders, flying spaceships, solving problems, watching scary movies, blowing stuff up and showing off her work to anyone who will listen.

Intellect/Skill:

Franny’s intelligence is her greatest asset. She is a Supergenius Mad Scientist who regularly makes advanced gadgets and chemical compounds in her room. When Franny was born, she was already able to speak and understand language, and went on to bring her Teddy Bear to life before she could walk.

Franny is constantly inventing and has done everything from build her own dolls, to Clone Dinosaurs, to genetically engineer rodent sized cows, and even create whole Frankenstein like creatures, fittingly. In TIF, she invented a twin headed robot which is stated to be twice as smart as any existing robot in the world, and she wasn’t even in Middle School yet. Franny’s inventions are insanely advanced, and regularly allow her to do things like warp spacetime and pull things off that are essentially indistinguishable from Magic, as we will see when we go into her arsenal. A Good example of how smart she is would be the time Franny Time Traveled to a Dystopian future ruled by her Evil Alternate Future Teen Self, and Franny was able to Outwit, hold her ground in a fight with, and escape her. Despite this Franny knowing everything she does plus more.

Franny is incredibly skilled in combat, regularly taking on large monsters strong enough to one shot her and comes out on top. She is skilled in the use of stealth, unconventional tactics and herself is a trickshot Expert Marksgirl with her own weapons.

Franny has shown off some badass skateboarding skills while 50 feet tall and riding a Bus, easily dodging several giant arrows being fired at her the whole time.

She also has really impressive stamina, as she routinely works all night on inventions and never seems tired, just functioning normally even if under great strain.

Powers:

Franny for the most part is a Mad Scientist type character who attains most of her abilities through the use of her scientific inventions, but she does actually have Some inherent powers unrelated to her Lab Work. This Includes:

• Regeneration:

So one thing to note immediately is that FKS humans are not exactly normal. Franny has been able to remove her own eyeballs before with seemingly no pain and pop them back in like nothing happened, and later was fine having her literal face ripped off by a device…and is also apparently so skilled at Surgery that she reattached her own face without leaving any visible scarring. But this is far from the limit to the damage she should be able to survive. Franny’s normal little Brother, Freddy, was at one point turned completely inside out by the suction force of her Vacuum, and he survived it like no big deal, meaning Franny should be at least capable of similar.

• Tunneling:

Franny on multiple occasions displays the ability to super quickly tunnel herself through the ground as a form of traversion.

• Bat Manipulation:

Franny also has a natural control over Bats, who are always nearby to her because, ‘Franny Likes the Bats, and the Bats like Franny.’ Due to this the Bats will obey her whistle commands, and they can even swarm and carry off large monsters for her and defeat them by dropping them from these heights.

• Mind Manipulation:

Franny seems to have a strangely super hypnotic whisper-like voice that can literally mind control people by speaking in such a way that they hear her words as though they were their own thoughts. She was able to make 3 classmates, who were super uninterested by her science, suddenly become super interested in her robot, think a bunch of modifications she wanted them to do were their own ideas and work all night implementing them without her even being there, all by using this trick.

• The Power of Love: 

The Power of Love is an ability that exists in-universe that can be activated when someone feels intense love for someone else or wishes to protect someone they care about. The POL Surges someone with Electricity, and amplifies their mind and body. Franny used it when she desperately needed to save her beloved dog, Igor. It made Franny, as well as others users, stronger and more focused allowing her to physically do things she couldn’t pull off before and build devices faster for its duration. 

The POL also has a Purifying effect, as it made Igor more healthy, less ugly, and caused his fleas and ticks to disappear as they could no longer infest him, this should apply to Franny in this state as well.

Gadgets/Tools/Potions Etc:

As the Little Mad Scientist she is, Franny has invented a Huge variety of strange and dangerous tools she can pull out for everything from war and bloodshed to solving the world's problems and more. We will be focusing on her more relevant things but Franny has made hundreds of things I had to look into.

• Size Alteration:

Franny has made a variety of Devices that can Alter Size. In Attack of the 50ft Cupid, she created a Device that can Enlarge anything it hits to 100x it’s actual size which allowed her to turn herself into a Kaiju to defeat the titular Cupid. 

This device was later upgraded to include a Shrinking function that could reverse the effects, allowing her to also shrink things to 1/100th their normal size. Later in The Frantastic Voyage, Franny had an even more extreme Shrinking device that allowed her to shrink herself to Cellular Size to enter into her dogs body.

• Invisibility Formula:

In The Invisible Fran, Franny made and now carries an Invisibility formula that makes both her and all her clothing completely invisible, allowing her to perfectly avoid detection. She also has an antidote to reverse this.

• Nuclear powered Brain Amplifier:

This helmet can be used to bolster someone's own intelligence. Franny rarely ever uses it though, not that she needs to, but if there's a problem even she somehow cannot solve, this is always a good option to have.

• Medieval Weaponry:

Franny is Regularly Shown to have somewhat of a collection of Maces, Axes and Crossbows that she is evidently skilled with.

• Flight-Suit:

Franny has a bat-like wing pack that allows her to fly through the air without limitation.

• Beam Weapons:

Franny also just Has ‘Death Rays,’ literal pistols that shoot deadly real lasers, and she's a super accurate shot, able to hit three thrown Targets midair with just one blast.

These Lasers hit with enough force to burn huge holes in walls like nothing, but that's not even close to her strongest laser, that would be her ‘Molecule Destroyer’, a beam that, fittingly, destroys whatever it hits beyond the molecular level. Additionally Franny has a few less outright lethal beams, including her Paralyser Ray, which instantly traps anyone hit in stasis, and also her Frog Gun which shoots living frogs at people.

• Bodily Manipulation:

In Bad Hair Day, Franny invents a formula that manipulates Keratin in the body which essentially turns her hair sentient, able to stretch and shapeshift however it wants, similar to Raoul from El Tigre or Entrapa’s hair in She-Ra. This hair went out of control and nearly destroyed the entire Town, but this is stated to only happen if she uses the formula on her Pigtails specifically, not her normal hair. Related to this, she can also use it on her nails to turn her fingers into extendable Wolverine claws.

• Hacking:

One might expect a genius scientist to be really good at Hacking, Franny is pretty much Magic with it. Franny was once able to hack into and take full control of television satellites, not only allowing her free control over her cable, but allowing her to control what everyone on the planet is watching. She could even spy on everyone on the planet by reversing their TVs so it broadcasts what the viewers are doing to Franny’s TV. Franny was also able to read people's minds through their TV’s doing this, as she was able to set up a meter showing how much support her Frandidate suit was getting in its speech around the world from people in real time scanning their thoughts to do so.

Franny’s Hacking is not even limited to ‘technology’ but just any object in general. She's got devices that can remote control Objects, such that one could give everyone on earth an Atomic Wedgie by using their underwear against them, or even make it so Postage Stamps Explode when licked.

• Transmutation Devices:

Franny has an unbelievable amount of devices for transmutation, like seriously its almost Comical, and dates back to the plot of the first book where she invented a Formula that turned her physical appearance into that of a normal girl, Jekyll and Hyde style, as well as an antidote to reverse it. Since then, she's gotten a lot more advanced with it. Franny has numerous potions using Animal DNA that mutate whatever they come into contact with to give them attributes of that animal, such as making Tap shoes that Jump with Kangaroo DNA, or mutating people into horrible monsters. For more practical use she has innumerable Transmutation devices including a ray that can turn people into anything from Monkeys, to Pie to a Pile of Diapers. 

Franny’s ability to Transmutate things is so extreme, she once turned The ENTIRE Ocean into Cola. Given the size of even the smallest oceans in the world, this would be Multi-Continental Scale Transmutation.

• Fusion/De-Fusion:

Related to Transmutation, Franny has a real knack for Fusing things together. In Mood Science, Franny created the ‘Mixer-Upper Machine’ which can fuse any objects together, and create interesting, often pun based combinations, such as combining a poodle with ice cream to make a chili dog or something. It can also unmix things, both to reverse these effects, or even to separate a normal thing into component parts, like when Franny did it to herself and ended up removing her emotions from her body. 

This created 5 emotional beings dubbed Angry Franny, Scaredy Franny, Sad Franny, Silly Franny and Duty Franny, while leaving our Franny an unmotivated emotionless husk. These emotional beings were pure emotions and did not have Franny's knowledge, but were also non biological entities as they were seemingly immune to the frog disease Franny made. In The Frandidate, Franny also had a device that allows her to fuse any amount of creatures and objects into one horrifying amalgamation she can control. This also allowed her to make the Frandidate suit.

• The Frandidate Suit:

By this point you may be asking, What’s The Frandidate suit? Well it is a living, Shapeshifting Sentient Suit that can be worn as a costume. The Suit can produce tendrils and weapons to attack with of course, but its main power is being able to automatically read the thoughts of those around it and shapeshift its body and voice to be the most appealing and convincing thing possible to that specific person, and say the exact perfect things to win them over, a brokenly effective form of Social Manipulation. 

The Frandidate Suit is fast enough to read and understand the entire mind, and change the appearance to match the tastes of a person so quickly and easily, it was able to give a broadcast to everyone on Earth and change its appearance, voice and language to appeal to all of humanity simultaneously, cycling through each tailor made form so fast it appeared as all of them at once as a form of illusion, which is potentially insane given Igor could mess with the controls before it could stop him.

• Necromancy:

Franny once violated the laws of nature and reanimated a Mummy which could eat full grown men no problem. (She rescued him later).

• Spaceships:

Franny has made multiple flying spacecrafts, including a Rocket that can reach the Moon in under 1 hours time, as well as a ship she equipped with a Laser canon so powerful, it was able to completely destroy a Meteor so large it would have destroyed half the planet on Impact, allowing her to save the world. It is unclear if they mean it would have wiped out life across half the Earth, or if it would have literally shattered half of the Earth. This puts the laser in the Low Teratons as a lowball, and possibly in the low Zettatons. Also the Image depicts the Ship flying roughly the Moon’s distance away to do this, a timeframe for how fast it did this isn’t given, but based on the fact that the ship leaves a trail leading all the way back to Earth which hasn’t dissipated in the image, this had to have been in seconds, putting the ship around the speed of light.

• Robots:

As one might imagine, Franny has also invented her fair share of Robots in her time, everything from a Giant Robot Teddy Bear, to a Two-Headed killer Robot, to a Robot Muffin Man who could make Muffins so delicious they basically mind control whoever eats them to be his muffin making slave force that works for his muffins. The most powerful Robots Franny ever made were Franbots 1, 2 & 3. These Robots were naturally Superhuman to the point they were stronger and faster than Franny and immune to damage from her conventional Weapons. They are stated to have been able to take over the world multiple times if she herself didn’t stop them, and they wield dangerous abilities such as a Majin Buu style Food Ray that can transmutate anyone it hits into food or reverse the effects. Franny had to defeat these things via tricking them into destroying Each other.

• The Manifester:

A rather broken device in Franny’s arsenal, this tool allows one to use Simulation Summoning, or the power to make a fictional thing real, to bring anything drawn on paper into reality, or Turn things in Reality back into Drawings. In Aot50fC, It was able to summon Cupid from just a picture of him on a Valentine’s Day card, and it had all the associated traits of Cupid, having flight, endless arrows which can force those hit to fall in love, and the ability to detect someone's state of love, despite these not being explicitly provided by the card itself. 

This essentially means Franny can just bring fictional characters to life, even ones she makes up on the spot. 

This device also not only turned Cupid back to his card state after his defeat, but also trapped one of Franny’s genetically engineered Cows in the card with him, meaning she can also Trap regular creatures by immersing them into fictional paper.

• Animacy Granting:

Franny is constantly bringing inanimate objects to life, everything from food to toys to even a Garden Gnome, which was so dangerous they had to call the police to stop it, making this the fastest Goosebumps plot ever.

She also has a weird fixation with bringing food to life and making it cannibalistic, making Broccoli that eats itself so kids don’t have to.

• Life Creation:

So Franny just in general can make any kind of life form, completely from scratch, that she wishes. Any monster of fiend you can imagine regardless of how implausible she can just generate lickity split with no real explanation. And the traits she gives them can be extremely specific, such as when she Genetically engineered Mosquitos which were both venomous AND poisonous with a cure to a disease she made.

• Duplication:

Teen Franny, Franny’s Dark Timeline future self, was able to make a Cloning device that can produce monster clones at such a rapid rate that they would quickly conquer the planet. This device will just duplicate anything put inside of it at a rapid rate. Our Franny could clearly make something like this if she ever wanted to, as she has a photocopier which was able to scan her aforementioned genetically engineered mosquitos, and did so literally 8 Billion times.

• Matter Generation:

Unsurprisingly Franny can also generate Matter from nothing, she invented a device that can make bite sized Jelly Donuts from thin air, and when set too high it flooded the whole school with jelly.

Even more extreme than this….by a Lot, Franny Has a device that can generate and Coat the Entire Sun in Sunscreen so we don’t have to apply it to ourselves.

• Sound Manipulation:

Franny states herself to be capable of making a Satellite that can blast painful sounds over large portions of Earth all at once, and I see no reason not to take her word for it on that.

• Gravity Manipulation:

She made literal food that unbounds those that eat it from the effects of Gravity, causing them to float away. Obviously if she can do this, she can certainly manipulate gravity in other more practical manners.

• Sensory Enhancement:

Franny’s Invented multiple tools that give her enhanced detection, like an Electron Microscope which can see microscopic things, X-Ray tech to see through clothes and show skeletons and stuff, a device that lets her communicate with fungus somehow, and an advanced Camera Surveillance system that can follow targets and let her check their locations and actions at any time.

• Elemental Manipulation:

On multiple occasions Franny has shown to have various elemental manipulation devices, such as her ‘Tornado in a Jar’ which can produce tornadoes whenever it is opened. The Evil Teen Franny has a Freeze Ray which can instantly Encase people in Ice as well as a Heat Ray so hot it can equal out the Freeze Ray.

• Disease Manipulation:

Franny invented a Disease Simulator Device that supposedly can cause someone to experience the symptoms of any disease known to man, allowing her to induce basically any status effect onto others. Plus, she's also gone the extra mile and created her own diseases, including an illness that has only positive effects on the infected. But she also made The Toad Contagion, a plague that spread through the air becoming a global pandemic. This Virus turns anyone exposed into a toad in just a matter of hours. But don’t worry, Franny later made a cure to this same illness to fix this.

• Time Manipulation:

Then we get into Franny’s various Time Manipulation devices. In The Fran that Time Forgot, Franny invented a Temporal Plate, which can rewind anything that was placed on it in time, such to allow her to eat Cake off of it, and then get the piece of cake back from the past.

Related to this, Franny invented her Time Travel Wristband, which allows her to travel to any point in the past or future at will, as well as spatially travel around the world, effectively working as instant teleportation and Time Travel. When traveling time, it can allow Franny to either Meet past or future versions of herself, or BECOME them. IE it gives her the option of being That Time Periods Franny, like a form of Temporal Possession where the time traveling Franny’s mind overrides the Franny of that time period, or being a separate Franny from another time that can interact with her. If Franny doesn’t want to actually travel through time herself, she also made a device that could see into the future to give her the information she wants remotely.

• Doomsday Device:

Something Franny invented on a Bender that she definitely regretted making. The Doomsday device is a small Gumball-Sized Bomb that Franny can remotely detonate. 

The Book shows that if this device were to explode it would reduce the Spherical Earth into a Crescent with only the furthest parts of the planet not being obliterated. It is later shown that if she were to send this device to the Moon and blow it up, it would violently shatter the moon to pieces. To do this this thing must have an explosive yield in the Dozens of Yottatons of TNT at minimum.

Pets:

• Igor:

Igor is Franny’s pet dog, who was given to her by her mother after she noticed she had no one to share her Mad Scientist related Interests with. Despite being a Dog, Igor is very smart, totally understanding human language and having a particular hobby for Puzzles and Painting. 

Igor is primarily Franny’s personal ‘Lab Assistant’, although he isn’t a PURE Lab, also being part Poodle, part Chihuahua, part Beagle, part Spaniel, part Shepherd and part some kind of Weasley thing that isn’t even exactly a dog. But his pedigree doesn’t matter, Franny likes him just the way he is, and even though he's a big goof who messes stuff up sometimes, he always tries his best.

He loves and is exceedingly loyal to Franny, constantly trying to cheer her up or entertain her whenever she’s feeling down, and even putting himself in harm's way numerous times to protect her from danger when things get hairy.

• The Rest:

Franny has created innumerable other Pets through some good old fashioned Genetic Engineering that she can potentially use. She's got a special breed of Piranhas that can FLY, Giant Venus Flytraps, a Flesh Eating Koala, a flying snake, you name it. In Lunch Walks Among Us, she made a Lunchmeat Creature, by stitching together a bunch of kids' school lunches. This creature obeys her commands to a T and has some degree of human intelligence. It is very strong, able to smash a 10 foot hole through a brick wall just by walking, and rip the school flagpole out of the ground. It then used this flagpole as a baseball bat and Knocked a Fiend out far past the horizon with one big swing. Fun Fact, this creature got a job as the School Custodian after the last one quit over something about being eaten by a mummy.

Speaking of that Fiend, this creature was made by combining a bunch of very specific lunch components and some Industrial Waste into a Giant Monstrous Fiend, something Franny knew intuitively the recipe for so she could make another of these things if wanted. This Fiend was able to take their teacher hostage and climb to the top of the flagpole with her, and later tank falling from the top of the pole onto concrete with no damage.

Feats:

Strength/Durability:

• Both Franny and Igor were able to tank multiple point blank chemical explosions that scorched her room. Franny should scale above Igor physically, as she is able to physically free him from a giant Chameleon that routinely tries to eat him.

• Scaling to Igor is relevant, as he survived another point blank chemical explosion, this one stated to have caused a 12 foot crater in the ground. Earlier in this book, Igor physically survived hits from the 50 foot Cupid, which could destroy large sections of buildings, and even damaged this cupid with his bite.

• Franny herself was able to tank 4 back-to-back hits from a large killer robot slamming its fist down on her with enough force to crack the floor apart. After which, her comparable classmates were able to help her by physically destroying this robot with their attacks.

Speed:

• Physically speaking, Both Franny and Igor were able to move fast enough to appear in a blur and outspeed Arrow fire from the Giant Cupid. After besting said Kaiju Love God, Franny and Igor moved at rapid speed to fix a bus, their house, reconfigure several needed inventions and make all her valentines day homework on time for school, within likely less than a few minutes. Considering that should easily be a long day's work for a normal person this would put Franny at moving a minimum of Mach 4.4.

• Now in terms of Reaction speed, as mentioned earlier, Franny made and piloted a ship that was so fast it could fly well past the moon in a fraction of a second given the trail didn’t dissipate (possibly faster) giving her at least Light Speed reaction time. Although this isn’t the BEST thing you could give her.

• As mentioned above, Igor was able to react fast enough to mess with the broadcast controls before The Frandidate Suit could stop him. The Same Frandidate suit that could Scan every human mind on Earth in about 1 seconds time. There are over 8 Billion people in the world and the average age of a human is 30.9 years. Condensing the information of collective humanity's minds in the time period of one real time second, means that the Frandidate Suit can process information 7,934,072,900,000,000,000 times faster than the average person. This means it can perceive events happening in just 30 Attoseconds. In that timeframe, a beam of light would only be able to move molecular distances, putting the Suits changes at over 1 Trillion times light speed.

Weaknesses:

Franny can often be quite brash and arrogant, not thinking things through or listening to the advice of others as she just naturally assumes that she knows better than anyone and is extremely unlikely to make errors. She is self aware of this problem and as such is a lot more cautious than someone like Dexter for instance, but still she has accidentally put the Earth in danger through her own short sightedness more than once. Franny also is extremely undiplomatic and not afraid to speak her mind when she finds something to be stupid or boring, she has had character development in this field to work past this to some degree, but there is a reason she thought it was a good idea to make the Social Influencing Frandidate Suit, it takes effort for her to get on others wavelengths.

Vendetta:

Okay, this fight would be so Fun! Vendetta from the Making Fiends series is another Dark scary little girl who is constantly creating monsters and got the whole town to be scared of her so there's a lot of immediate thematic connections. She has very similar physical stats to Franny, but the two also have enormous advantages over each other with Franny dominating Offense and Vendetta dominating Defense making this a real puzzle of a matchup to figure out who’d come out on top. But another great aspect of this fight is just the character interactions. Yeah these two would kinda Hate Each other, as unlike Franny who is a good and sweet person beneath her exterior, Vendetta is basically like the Evil Teen Franny from the Dark Future, who Does seek to conquer the world, Does terrorize her school and family for kicks, and IS abusive to her animal lab assistant. Plus since Vendetta is a Witch you get a really cool Mad Science VS Dark Magic theme going for it too!
