Death Battle Analysis: Kharis

Hello Folks and welcome to Part 1 of Analysis Blog on the Universal Mummy! That's right Part 1 as Universal has not one, but two Mummies both of which are equally influential on the modern image of this underrated type of classic monster, but took it in completely different directions. Be sure to tune in tomorrow for Part 2 where we talk about Imhotep, because today we are focusing on the iconic Mummy, Kharis! Enjoy.

Background:

3,700 years ago (1805 BC) in Karnak, Egypt, there existed a Shakespearean style love story between the Princess Ananka of the royal house and the first high priest of Karnak, Kharis. Kharis and Ananka loved each other dearly, but said love was forbidden, as the Princess in life was to be devoted only to the god Amun-Ra.
Unable to be without each other, Kharis and her developed a work around to this dilemma, she may not be able to be with him in Life, but if she were to die and be brought back, the Egyptians and the Gods would be none the wiser.
And so the princess Ananka poisoned herself, the national tragedy turning to a massive funeral conducted by Kharis himself.
Ananka was mummified, blessed and laid to rest in a sealed tomb where she was to remain for all eternity.
But the dead would not rest as in accordance with their plan, Kharis stole the forbidden Tana Leaves from the feet of Isis. When brewed into a tea called Tana Fluid, these leaves will resurrect and preserve the dead, making them Immortal.
With leaves in hand, Kharis broke the seal on Ananka’s tomb and attempted the ritual to resurrect her so they could be together. Unfortunately for him he was caught in the act and arrested, being brought before the Pharaoh himself.
There it was decreed that for commuting this great act of Sacrilege, Kharis was condemned to have his tongue cut out and be Mummified alive.
To Condemn him further, Kharis was not provided with any of the inscriptions to bless the dead as they search for the after life, all written records of Kharis’ existence were destroyed, and all the slaves who had buried him were slain to prevent any from discovering this condemned mummy.
Kharis Was given the Curse of Amun-Ra, and was buried alive in a wall overlooking his princess Ananka, he himself was fed Tana Fluid, which would prevent him from dying as he would guard his princess for all eternity, and destroy anyone who violates her tomb. As those who defile the will of the ancient gods, a cruel and violent death shall be their fate.
Kharis lay dormant for centuries until the 1930’s, when western Archeologists discovered Ananka’s tomb and awakened the dormant Mummy. As part of his god given curse, Kharis sought out to kill every single person that Dared enter this forbidden tomb as well as their entire bloodlines.
While some members of the initial attack managed to escape, the Mummy’s Curse is not so easily swayed. After making his way to countries like Britain and America, he did successfully manage to pull off killing everyone responsible for desecrating his tomb.
Unfortunately for the Mummy he never did manage to reclaim his Princess Ananka, and after causing a reign of terror lasting from 1940-1995, the mummy was finally defeated after being sealed away in an ancient church.
Kharis is somewhat of a tragic figure, lovesick for his forbidden princess to the point of near madness, over the centuries he has grown somewhat fixed in the single minded thinking of his new duty to preserving the purity of his Princess, which is being with her in some small way. This leads him to channel immense amounts of rage towards those the curse now deems his enemies, an unstoppable determination to punish the guilty by the laws of Ancient Egypt.

Intellect & Skills:

Kharis is very intelligent, being literally thousands of years old and trained as the High Priest of Karnak. He has repeatedly been shown to have expert tracking skills, really good trap setting abilities and is stealthy enough to not only sneak around the American streets undetected but to break into a solitary confinement cell in a prison without being seen.

Powers:

Kharis’ supernatural powers come from Tana Fluid, a brew made from the forbidden and currently extinct Tana Leaves, which are the secret to eternal life, able to live forever and survive almost anything. The drawback however is it must be drunk once every night of the full moon in order to maintain oneself. Thankfully for Kharis, the ancient priests buried him with an enormous supply of these Tana Leaves and he began drinking it after awakening from his dormancy. The Tana Leaves grant him many powers, including:
  • Super Survivability:
Thanks to the power of the Tana leaves, Kharis possesses unstoppable endurance, able to power through practically anything his foes throw at him. It’s not that Kharis has crazy durability or regeneration, rather Kharis doesn’t require any part of his body to survive. Bullets and Blades pass harmlessly through his form with no negative effect. Kharis is immune to aging, disease, decay and does not require food, sleep or oxygen to persevere. His eternal nature has even multiple times protected him from being burned in tremendous fires without any lasting effect, and it’s implied his severed limbs could continue to act on their own accord. Kharis would need to be dismembered into very small pieces to truly be stopped.
  • Fear Aura:
Kharis’ physical appearance is so terrifying, he has often been able to make people go catatonic, or even suffer strokes just by looking at him.
  • Super Senses:
Kharis has a mystical super sense that lets him track those he is after of things he is after such as tana fluid from seemingly any distance away, drawn to them like a moth to a flame.
  • Wrapping Manipulation:
Also like many stereotypical Mummies, Kharis seems to be able to control his wrappings, unleashing them to catch and ensnare objects and foes. He was able to use this to grab on to and pull himself into a speeding car.

Feats:

Strength:
  • Tore through a solid stone wall with such force it collapsed a large church.
  • Was stated to have killed a previous expedition by causing a Landslide.
  • Can casually strangle people to death with only one arm.
  • Tore through a wooden fence like nothing.
  • Smashed through a large wooden gate by just walking into it.
  • Broke through large wood doors like nothing.
  • Tore through a brick wall.
  • Broke through several layers of reinforced barriers.
  • Swam out from the bottomless pit of a swamp.
Durability:
  • Tanked being Lit on Fire and crushed in a collapsing building.
  • Tanked being buried under hundreds of tons of stone.
Speed:
  • Murdered a guy and escaped the cave they were in before his friends just outside the cave could get in there to help him.
  • Escaped through the back of a tent and a large distance away, while carrying a girl, before two people just outside the tent came in after hearing her scream.
  • Grabbed onto and held onto a speeding car.
General:
  • Survived being buried at the bottom of a swamp for 25 years.
  • Actually Did Murder all the people who broke into his crypt.
  • Killed two entire Expeditions off screen
  • Is the only universal Monster to have actually caused the main girl to die.

Summary:

Advantages:

  • Large Building Level.
  • Superhuman speed.
  • Undying Body.
  • Fear Aura.
  • Super Senses.
  • Wrapping Manipulation.

Disadvantages:

  • Relies on Tana Fluid to survive.
  • His fierce determination has caused him to overlook certain factors.
  • He can only take so much punishment before going down.

Recommended Opponent:

Chief Wooden Head:
Chief Wooden Head from Creepshow would be a very interesting matchup for Kharis as both of which are vengeful guardian spirits from an ancient culture that pursue and kill violators to their customs. Both of which have super survivability and super senses, as well as very similar stats it would be an interesting brawl to say the least.

  1. Egyptian Mythology is very interesting! It's really interesting to see the sort of the archetype forming of the modern mummy. Cool blog Thor, it went by pretty quickly partly because of the character's stats but also partly I think because of how well you did at quickly sucking me into the character. Kharis seems a surprisingly tragic villain. I say surprisingly because I'm used to Dracula who also came out around the time who is very much not supposed to be sympathetic (though I guess some of the other Universal Monsters are meant to be tragic).

Kharis might not be the toughest horror villain out there, but his fear aura is pretty darn strong for his tier, and his raw endurance would certainly give it time to work. I'm also always a fan of super senses as an ability. I think it's a really underrated ability as it can completely nullify stealth and it gives information which is always important in winning close matchups.

He's also in general it seems a really efficient sort given his intellect, able to somehow get to America and Britain despite his....disadvantages in doing so, as well as his ultra-focused nature and ability to survive at the bottom of the swamp for two and a half decades. I guess that explains his high successful kill rate. Excited to learn about Imhotep and also excited to see you analyze the verse from the teaser! :)

  2. A well written, concise blog! Like I said before, it’s a shame older horror monsters don’t seem as focused on in versus, so I think it’s really cool that you are giving them some attention. Kharis really does seem like a terrifying opponent with his undying body. Any opponent on his level would find it tough to put him down for good. I find it kinda surprising how much of a hardcore serial killer Kharis is. Like it’s not enough to kill those who enter the tomb, but their entire freakin blood lines. Definitely a lot different then you would expect this character to be especially with his intelligence (kinda reminds me of the book version of Frankenstein in some ways). Chief Wooden Head seems like a great opponent for him too. Good idea to share only half the next time today; looking forward to tomorrow’s blog and seeing who Misty will fight.

  3. A double feature, nice! If part 2 is even half as good as this, it's gonna be awesome! I've seen Abbott and Costello meet The Mummy, but never saw the OG film(s) myself. Seems like a classic tale of star-crossed lovers, with a gruesome twist! I always thought mummies were undead but they KEPT HIM ALIVE! Whaaaat? Crazy, and horrific. Poor dude must be nuttier than an Oh Henry bar by now.

After being so used to slow, shambling mummies, I must admit this one is a lot faster and more nimble than I thought. And survived fires?! Crazy! I always thought burning mummies was a surefire way to make them go away. Reminds me a bit of Dracula, how the most famous of his kind can overcome the classic weaknesses. Better swimmer than I thought and way more sneaky too.

I wanted to make sure I mentioned the great use of music and images in this blog. The old school soundtracks really got me in the mood for a good monster movie and they even seemed to line up with the gifs as I made my way through your blog. The best part was when the tense first track swelled to a crescendo just as I was watching the gif where the Mummy awakens and leaves his tomb. Spooky stuff!

And you even included a trailer for a new blog that took me completely by surprise! I must admit, I don't really remember Misty but your trailer's got me curious about how her powers work. And I'm dying to know who her opponent is! Guess you'll see me again in the near future ;)
Oh, speaking of opponents, Chief Wooden Head sounds like the *perfect* opponent for Kharsis! Loved that Creepshow story, and there's a very strong thematic connection between these two silent guardians. From what I remember, it seems like a very even fight too. Great choice Thor, and great blog!
