Charmcaster is one of the
longest standing villains in the Ben 10 franchise and essentially the arch
nemesis to Gwen Tennyson, giving her a wide impact on the series overall.
Charmcaster was born to a race of humans, living in a magical dimension called Ledgerdomain,
under the name, Hope. This dimension is made entirely of Mana and is the source
of all the magic power in the Ben 10 Multiverse. Unfortunately, it was ruled by
a magical tyrant named Addwaitya, who sought to enslave or destroy all humans
living there. Charmcaster’s father sacrificed himself in order to allow her to
escape to Earth, alongside her uncle, Hex. Afterward, Charmcaster swore to
master magic and become powerful enough to destroy Addwaitya, liberate
Ledgerdomain and bring her father back to her, even if she had to destroy
anything that got in her way. Charmcaster has grown into quite the powerful
Witch over her 21 years. Even as a Teenager, she was more than capable of
competing with some of Ben’s fastest and strongest aliens at the time like
Stinkfly and Cannonbolt, as well as being skilled enough to cold cock martial
artists like Gwen in just one punch. However after she defeated Addwaitya and
took over Ledgerdomain, (yes she eventually pulled that off), she took the
source of Addwaitya’s power, The Alpha Rune, which gave her a massive and
permanent power increase. With her powers, Charmcaster was able to instantly
kill Gwen in her Anodite form, this is the same Anodite form which would have
been able to solo The Hybreed’s fleet of hundreds of warships, each one capable
of violently shattering planets in one shot and tanking the impact, which would
come out to Dwarf Star Level in total. This is backed up by her energy
manipulation being so strong it vaporized Chomastone when he tried to absorb
it, and Chromastone’s energy manipulation was strong enough to recreate the
planet of Petropia and bring its entire population back to life. Also
Chromastone couldn’t blitz her, and he’s so fast he once flew halfway across
the galaxy in a short timeframe requiring speeds billions of times faster than
light.
Charmcaster has a wide variety
of powers, she is able to control numerous elements like Fire, Water and all
kinds of plant life to use in a wide variety of attacks. She can summon large
explosions, bind people in magical chains and toss people around and crush them
with telekinesis. Although Magical attacks are her bread and butter, able to
fire magic projectiles, Danmaku attacks, large focused magic beams and even
magical force fields that shield her while still allowing her attacks to pass
through. That said Charmcaster’s greatest defense is her ability to dispel
opposing magic attacks, or even charm herself and others to totally nullify the
magical attacks of her foes. Charmcaster can fly, cast cloaking fields over herself,
cast illusions for disguises, and has vast super senses able to spy on the
hero’s knowing everything they do from another dimension with her all seeing
eye as well as use her eyes to scan someone for magical power. Charmcaster also
can both teleport to and open portals to other dimensions and attack from there
in a wide variety, heck she literally stated she went to The Generator Rex
universe off screen. Charmcaster also uses a wide variety of hax, she was able
to Mind Control Kevin, as well as force Ben and Gwen’s minds to swap bodies.
She can bring inanimate objects to life and manipulate technology to fight for
her, she can even simulation summon fictional characters into existence like
she did Mr. Smoothie. Charmcaster also has pretty advanced Transmutation, able
to turn projectile attacks into flower petals and make her foes into helpless
stone statues she keeps in her purse. That said her deadliest ability is by far
her Energy Manipulation.
Charmcaster is able to
completely control and redirect all energy that comes her way, as well as
absorb the life energy of all that stand in her way to grow even stronger.
Charmcaster was able to drain Gwen, Kevin and Ben down to lifeless husks in
seconds, as well as drain away the life force of every living thing in the
Ledgerdomain dimension. Her energy draining resistance is so great that attempts
to drain her by Darkstar were completely unable to affect her, and Darkstar is
theorized to be able to Drain Alien X by Ben himself. Also Speaking of
Ledgerdomain, That place is now Charmcaster’s...well...domain. Within this
dimension she is essentially a goddess who is completely immune to all magic in
the Ben 10 Universe and manipulates the laws of reality. She also uses it as a
sort of Dimensional trap, as none can exit or leave Ledgerdomain without
knowing its True Name, including dimensional travelers, so Charmcaster cast a
spell so that Ledgerdomain’s true name changes every few seconds, No one can
enter or leave unless she allows it. Oh and also she can turn into a Fire
Breathing Dragon.
Lastly Charmcaster has this
magical bag of tricks, which is alive and obeys her every order. Within this
bag is a pocket dimension containing numerous tricks she uses in combat like
her Uncle’s powerful magic staff, ring projectiles she can change the size of,
and a large army of different stone golems she can send forth to fight for her,
including stone bats, chicks, dogs and monsters. Charmcaster’s primary weakness
is her mental instability, likely caused by her father rejecting what a warped
person she had become and returning to the afterlife, she is damaged and
carries those that wronged her around in her purse as paperweights, leaving her
very paranoid.

So
how would she do in other verses?
In
DC, Charmcaster would manage to be pretty powerful compared to the series’s own
magical superheroes having physical Stats similar to Zatanna and a pretty
advanced toolkit of hax and powers to start with, but her powers like Magical
Resistance, Draining/Absorbing Magical Energy and trapping people in her domain
would be some pretty Broken moves against characters like this and it would
take a Very skilled Magician Like Zatanna to actually have a chance at stopping
her. And if the battle ends up in Ledgerdomain her only shot would be to pull
out her Metamagic. In general DC she would be above characters like Blue Beetle
and Cyborg and an immediate threat to the planet.
In
the Bayonetta series Charmcaster would place rather interestingly among that
series’s Umbran Witches. She is significantly faster than them but they are
stronger and much more skilled in physical combat. Charmcaster's Magic
resistance is not as helpful, given that the witches relay much more on combat
than spells, but Charmcaster's ability to Lock foes in her realm would
completely nullify their dimensional manipulation defenses as they can no
longer turn invisible and intangible by going to purgatorio, although given
Charmcaster's senses that would not have worked anyway. The Witches do have an
advantage however in their Witch Time ability, Charmcaster has NO Time
manipulation abilities and because of that Could get overwhelmed and blitzed if
she's not careful. That said while the umbran witches can protect their minds
from her, they are still vulnerable to her energy draining so it would be
imperative to take her down quickly.
In
the Xiaolin Showdown series, Charmcaster would be among the most powerful
characters in the verse, having similar powers to that of top tiers like Dashi
and Unrestricted Wuya, with speed comparable to the greatest showings of the
Shen Gong Wu. While her energy draining powers would be very hard for the verse
to deal with, the characters can make it so she cannot fight them in
Ledgerdomain as the Yinyang Yoyo would Still be able to work in that world, due
to it bringing its world to where it's summoned rather than being a mere
gateway, and Charmcaster with her mental instability would not fair well in the
Yinyang world. There are also various Wu like the Sung Chi Lantern that could
help mitigate her own energy draining, but ultimately this verse would need to
be very careful.
In
Darkstalkers, Charmcaster would place, interesting. Her power is superior to
that of Donnavan and Bishamon, though still far below that of high tiers like
Pyron, Jedah and Lilith. Than Being said her speed is comparable to that of
those hightiers which means she cannot be blitzed by them and has potential to
defeat them with hax. Energy Draining in particular is shown to be very
effective on the likes of Pyron and all of that energy would immediately make
Charmcaster a super powerful threat, able to beat anyone short of Anita and
would essentially have to beat Jedah in a Hax Quickdraw.
Lastly
in the Sailor Moon series Charmcaster would be a very notable threat within the
first 2 arcs. She would be able to completely solo The Dark Kingdom including
the weakened Metalia thanks to her godly superior energy draining and
resistance to magical attacks, in addition to the fact she would see everything
coming ahead of time with her vastly improved senses. In the 2nd Arc
Charmcaster is much more balanced, actually being directly comparable to Black
Lady, Black lady being stronger, and Charmcaster being faster but still able to
compete with one another, these two would have a rather interesting fight that
I am not quite sure who would win, as Black Lady could persist the energy
draining of Charmcaster due to the Silver Crystal, and her ability to warp
through spacetime would be extremely Useful.
Fantastic blog Thor, even better then your norm which is saying something. Charmcaster sure has gotten a lot stronger since original series when we saw. I'm used to her being a somewhat inexperienced is potent magician girl like an evil Mana and I find out she is the goddess of her own dimension where all magic comes from and can fight cosmic beings and stuff. I was especially impressed by her energy and dimensional manipulation both of which are clearly massively potent and her magic resistance is something out of Clamp.
ReplyDeletePerhaps I liked this one so much because 4 out of the 5 series you used for comparison were among my favorite series including my favorite series and I did at least like the fifth. I think my favorite of the points you included were the meta-dimensional stuff in Bayo, the yin-yang yo in XS and most of all the comparison with Black Lady who is also a pretty unstable magic girl. I was very impressed that she could be a threat to Metaria and to Zatanna, both of which I know are very strong and hax beings, hard to stop.
Was also surprised at her motivation! Didn't think it was gonna be that noble. Too bad it seems it didn't at all turn out well for her. Such spite never seems too. And was surprised that she went to Generator Rex-verse, why wasn't that mentioned in the crossover? :P
Glad that Gwen can keep the magic of the multiverse relatively safe from her it seems. Gwen was one of my favorite characters on the show and the magicians were some of my favorite villains.
Another blog that took me completely by surprise (that's always a good thing). Even though I've never watched much of the series, of course I know about Ben 10 through your other blogs and seeing it pop up on the internet quite often thanks to its popularity. But despite that, I've never seen this character before in my life until I clicked on this blog! She must be a very underrated character because she seems to have a significant role in the series and wow, what a villain! This is one of the most impressive mages I've seen over the years, her kit and feats are amazing!
ReplyDeleteI love the clever pun in her homeworld's name and just from reading this blog, Charmcaster seems to have a very fleshed out background and personality. You did a fantastic job detailing this character Thor; you covered a ton in a relatively short amount of space. I feel like I know her despite never seeing one of her episodes.
And the powers! One of my favorite things about her is the huge amount of abilities she has. It'd be a waste of space to list everything I like here when you've detailed all that already, but a few of my favorite powers that stand out the most are her energy draining (and resistance!), dragon transformation and the clever way she turned her domain into a dimensional trap to those who enter.
Very interesting collection of verses to compare Charmcaster to, lots of strong magic here. DC has tons of powerful mages so I was very impressed to see her rank so highly there. Really cool to see the back and forth of the advantages and disadvantages she'd have in Bayonetta's series. I still feel rusty when talking about Xiaolin Showdown, but it seems to have some pretty wild magic for a series I assumed was mostly focused on martial arts. Those yo-yos caught my eye. She looks like she has good traction in Darkstalkers, I love it when characters can take advantage of a foreign universe to get big power boosts. And Sailor Moon, hoo boy. Just like DC, you aim high! Which is appropriate, I said before how much I was impressed by Charmcaster's power. Black Lady vs Charmcaster seems like a pretty cool fight, I'd like to see that!
Great blog dude, I really enjoyed this one. I might just have a new favorite Cartoon Network villainess ;)
I remember this character! I’m surprised that Charmcaster turned so op later in Ben 10, especially becoming a goddess of her own dimension. It’s cool to see how her brand of magic handles against the magic of other verses. Your placement of how she would stand in verses like DC and Darkstalkers seems just right. Even though she would still be a huge threat, it’s cool to see Yin Yang Yo verse has tricks up it’s sleeve to counter Charmcaster. Your point about her having no counter against Bayonetta’s time manipulation was cool; such a simple yet effective weakness. Your comparison of her abilities against Black Lady’s does make it seem like an interesting and cool matchup. I think all of these were very well thought out so good job!
