Little Witch Academia VS Strategy Guide

‘Bout Time I did one of these for an anime series! I haven’t seen nearly as many anime as most geeks of my caliber, but hey a lot of the ones I have I like very much, and today we have no exception! Little Witch Academia is one of my top 5 favorite Magical Girl series, and the only one left that I wasn’t beaten to covering, but hey, I’m happy to do it myself! Here is how to be OP in Little Witch Academia!

Continent Level:

Here we have the main tier of the verse, containing all of the series’ mainstay witches and various powerful mythological creatures from a wide range of cultures. Characters in this tier are continental, scaling off Akko and Diana enduring an explosion that blanketed across Europe, Africa and the Atlantic, near its epicenter. As well as being able to fight creatures displayed in the game to be able to survive a shot from Shiny Arc, which once shot into space and left a massive scar on the face of the moon.

In terms of speed, Witches have been able to react to and even catch the Legendary Broom, Shooting Star, which is fast enough to circle the globe in just a few seconds, and casually outspeed the Pixel Missile, which could travel at comparable speeds to the Shiny Arc shot that could reach the moon in seconds. Both of these would be in the high end of the Relativistic range, so Continental Relativistic shall be the bar here.

Most of the abilities in this verse are derived from the use of Magic, an ancient and powerful energy from every culture on Earth. Magic is what mythical creatures are animated by and how Witches perform spells. During the series, Magic itself is a dying energy source disappearing from the world, and can only be used in a few key locations, but after Akko successfully revived Yggdrasil, she ushered in a new magical golden age and it can now be used completely uninhibited, like a reverse Star VS FOE.

Anyway, Witches have a wide variety of powers. By the end, every Witch in the series, including total noobs like Akko, are able to Fly on broomsticks, breathe in space, create matter and objects from nothing, shoot damaging magical projectiles and manipulate the elements, able to make blasts or danmaku style spreads of Fire, Water, Earth and Wind, as well as other things such as Lightning, Meteors, Plants and Light itself. Witches very commonly have telekinesis to manipulate objects and enemies around them, Airtight Force Fields to protect them from harm, even from poisonous gasses, Intangibility to phase through walls and attacks altogether, and Anti-Intangibility so casual, they literally hunt ghosts as a sporting event.

With Metamorphosis Magic, witches can shapeshift their body into animals, like a bird to fly, a mouse to fit in small places, a Merman to breathe underwater or a wide range of strong animals to gain higher stats, they can even disguise themselves as specific people to go undercover. Levitation magic allows witches to walk through thin air by generating magic platforms from their feet, and with movement magic, they can even teleport to any place with magical energy, which now includes the entire planet. Witches can also control animals, induce sleep onto foes, and turn completely invisible. Invisibility is unlikely to work against them though, thanks to detection magic giving the caster omnipresent detection of their surroundings, even against the invisible, they can also see into the future with Fortune magic, granting them precognition. They have Healing Magic and Mending Magic which allow them to instantly heal physical ailments and repair broken objects respectively, Synthesis magic which disperses ailments, even as bad as spontaneous combustion, among a large group of people to dilute its potency to nothing, or even fuse people into a single being, and Control magic which straight up allows them to take bodily control of others against their will. The most broken common spell is likely Binding magic, which traps witches in a location and is nearly impossible to escaped from due to it resetting the timeline of them becoming trapped every time they attempt to escape, it was only able to be escaped via Summoning magic which lets you summon people and objects to your location.

Now to get into the more Specific characters to see what they pack on top of all that. Let’s start with Akko, Akko has incredible Necromancy abilities, able to raise and control the dead at her leisure, which is really weird considering its the most taboo magic and she once literally made a band of Mummies do her chores for her, she also has the All-Tongue that allows her to instantly learn and understand any language including those spoken by animals, cryptids and fantasy creatures, but most potently, Akko is able to drain, steal or absorb magic from surrounding sources in order to empower herself. Rounding out the rest of the Red Ribbon Witches are Lotte and Sucy, Lotte of which is able to summon, talk to and physically interact with spirits, and ghosts, read the emotions of any sentient thing to understand their thoughts, and make a massive wave of powerful ghost energy that attacks the soul by singing. She can also raise spirits from old objects to bring them to life and completely control them, she once animated a sunken Pirate ship and had it kill a giant sea monster with cannon fire, and can even shut down a whole army of possessed objects controlled by others like nothing. Lotte also can send someone's mental body into the mind of someone else where they can do horrific things, to them in their subconscious. But the most broken one is Sucy, who has a variety of haxy powers including the ability to spatially warp her body, allowing her to make herself disappear, or even leave some of her functioning body parts floating in the area, basically going into another dimension overlapping our own like an umbran witch. She can also use this as a pocket dimension to store stuff, erase the memories of entire crowds of people, transmutate matter, impose silence on others, use voodoo to inflict harm or status effects, and see 4th wall effects. But most of her powers revolve around poisons and mushrooms, she can change the size of mushrooms and control them, to use as parachutes or shields, generate poisonous, acidic or explosive waves and gases, completely Dissolve powerful monsters on contact, and release powerful mushroom spores that turn people into zombies.

Past them you have the legendary witch Shiny Chariot, who has extremely powerful illusion magic that can cover an entire area at once, making all sorts of fantastical images and sounds and can even convince someone they are underwater or display images of the past. Her most dangerous spell is Dream Fuel Spirit, which can suck all the magic power out of everyone in the surrounding area and expend it in her own spells, while it can be regained after a lot of training, it crippled the magic of Akko and Diana for years. She can also create dimensional portals to the leyline, trap people in spherical force fields, turn her body into a logia construct of light, bolster her own physical stats, make a goddamn lightsabre and has clairyoyance on the locations and events of the world via her astronomy. Jasminka is possessed by the ghost of starvation, an entity that needs to constantly be fed or it will consume everything, it has massive tentacles, and can overpower and outspeed every witch in the series. Speaking of Ghosts, the witch Molly is a powerful Ghost that can teleport, turn intangible or invisible, astral project, use magic, and exists completely outside of time, so is immune to time hax, this also means everyone's memories pertaining to her are periodically reset.

Many Witches in this series are high level Supergenuises such as Diana, the absolute prodigy witch, who knows more about magic than any of her professors, has taught herself numerous dead languages, and has invented a great deal of high level magic spells, such as rewinding time, a powerful danmaku attack of swords and other weapons from her past family, and a projectile that undoes any magical effect. There's also Constanze, the mechanical witch, she is a freaking super genius who combines magic and science into one thing, she is capable of making dozens of super advanced robots with full AI and the ability to speak for her, or an entire large underground laboratory right out of Dexter. She also has Guns and RPGs that blast magical danmaku attacks, as well as a massive transforming giant robot called Grand Chariot, which she can summon on command. Lastly there is Croix, who is basically like if you merged Diana and Constanze together and gave them a lot of experience. She can control dozens of flying discs created from and powered by magic, and invented magical tablets as well as her trademark Pixels. These little buggers are flying, shape shifting cubes that can manipulate, cause, and absorb emotions, converting them into magical energy. She can massively manipulate magical energy, use it to re-energize dead fantasy creatures, render people unconscious and see their whole emotional spectrum. Croix can also bring Hieroglyphics to life, use Pixels to possess objects and creatures to turn them into powerful monsters, take control of technology, including every TV on Earth, block or absorb magic power, etc.

To go into the various creatures that inhabit this world, there are intangible ghosts which are invisible to all non magical people, Cupid Bees that can make people fall in love with the first thing they see and Gremlins that can passively destroy or fix any technology in their vicinity. There are blobs with self duplication and magic proof skin that can only be harmed from the inside, the Cockatrice, an enormous giant bird that has incredibly poisonous feathers and can breathe a gas that transmutates whatever it hits into solid stone, and numerous flying dragons that have various potent elemental powers. The most powerful Dragon is The Ancient Dragon, a flying fire breathing monster that is immune to all conventional magic, it passively absorbs and grows stronger from any magical attack, even including Sucy’s poison, and seeks out sources of powerful magic to consume. There’s The Titan, giant stone creature that can regenerate its body from surrounding metal objects, and also the dreaded Time Demon which has power over time, able to create and destroy an infinite time loop, hide outside of space time, time travel, regenerate from being completely destroyed, steal people's memories and resist all sorts of time hax, it is also telepathic and can shoot lasers.

But the MOST dangerous character in this tier is Professor Woodward. Woodward is an astral entity, she can fly, turn invisible, teleport, appear as anything and create vast illusions SO impressive she could even create 4 of her past students with their personality and magic still intact. She is technically omnipresent as she exists inside the omnipresent blue moon abyss, which can only be accessed During a blue moon, meaning she can harm one at any point, while only being vulnerable for one rarely occurring evening. She has massive nature manipulation, able to erect a giant thick forest in Diana’s path in seconds, as well as blind Diana by having magic leaves attach themselves over her eyes, she can even manipulate gremlins to destroy tech of her enemies. She also is insanely intelligent, while she is not omniscient, many witches believe her to be, this is because simply put, if she does not know the answer to the question, no one on earth could answer it, making her as smart or smarter than collective humanity.

So this veres is surprisingly potent, It has numerous powers and hax including those that can affect spacetime, souls and minds, actual counterplay to its own main strategy with anti-magic stuff and a very large amount of characters that all scale to the same abilities for the most part. It also has a general lack of weaknesses, in addition to the numerous supergenius, stealth boosting powers and ability to hit other celestial bodies, witches like Akko have been able to stand attempting to cast a spell for 24 straight hours. And while most Witches aren’t overly skilled in combat, a witch I didn’t mention above, Amanda, basically has skill as her speciality. She is a master acrobat and dancer who once casually walked through an entire advanced anti witch and monster security system with her eyes closed, it took an entire staff of witch professors to catch her. She's also an expert martial artist who has numerous times defeated physically superior foes in hand to hand and sword combat through sheer skill.

That being said, having high skill is never a bad thing, and would be helpful against these witches most of the time. Relying on Magic or Technology to fight this tier is doable, but generally something you would want to avoid as there are Anti-Magic and Technopathy that could disrupt your game plan. That being said it is established you can resist having your magic stolen if you have strong enough emotional drive, so if you are going that route, I would exploit that. There are entities that are Intangible, or can exist in other parts of spacetime, so having some means to combat things like that are a must. There's also really good Illusions within this verse so some form of extrasensory ability would go a long way.

Lady Palutena:

Lady Palutena from Kid Icarus. Palutena is the Greek? Goddess of Light and Ruler of Skyworld who is comparable to Viridi, who in mortal form is stated to be able to remove the Earth's core. She can also keep up with Pit in a physical fight, who has numerous Country level feats, speed fast enough to fly into deep space in under a minute, and enough skill to battle his way through entire armies of comparable warriors. So Palutena should be on par with the witches in physical stats, with a skill advantage against the vast majority of them in a fight. Since Palutena’s powers are divine rather than magic, the natural magic negation abilities of this verse would do nothing to hinder her abilities, which sucks for them because she has a Lot of abilities that would seriously disrupt their game plan. Palutena’s most dangerous ability for this verse is Power Thief, which allows her to temporarily steal the powers of others, allowing her to use them herself while preventing the owner of said powers from using them. With this our playful goddess can massively bolster her already impressive arsenal with the witch’s own magic. She also can use Interfere, a beacon she can plant that prevents anyone but her from using their powers as an alternate means of debuffing these haxy opponents. Even without abusing these, Palutena has a pretty large arsenal of powers in her own right, including many of the powers displayed by the witches such as Flight, Teleportation, Energy Attacks, Telekinesis, Invisibility, Intangibility, Stat Boosts, Force Fields, Petrification, Regeneration, Poison Manipulation and even Breaking the 4th Wall. But she also has some powers that would be very helpful in taking the verse head on, like her heavenly light revealing illusions or invisibility, her resistance to Lotte’s soul hax attack, her attack reflection to just stop all projectile based attacks, or moves like creating a small black hole and inducing death being an instant kill attack on most entities.

That being said, while Palutena could likely defeat any character in this tier in a straight up fight, if she’s going to take on the verse she would need to be on constant guard, someone particularly skilled like Amanada could easily Punch her Lights Out if she allows her the chance. For a more safe bet, I would suggest.

Kur:

Kur the Ultimate Cryptid from The Secret Saturdays. Kur is an ancient immortal entity that has existed since the Earth was still young, and takes possession of whatever the dominant species is at the time it exists. Kur, back in its heyday, could wipe all civilization from the world with its power, which would be at least country level, it can also keep up with the main cast of the verse, who can consistently dodge lightning and electricity. While it is weaker and slower than the Witches here, Kur is not a physical entity, but a Spiritual one, which means the Witches cannot affect him with any of their direct attacks anyway, at best they would destroy his host body, but he would simply find a new one. Kur’s primary power is to control every single Cryptid on the planet. A Cryptid is a theoretical creature not proven to exist in regular science, things such as Bigfoot or The Lochness Monster, but in the Saturdays verse, that definition includes things from various ancient mythologies as well. So what's something rather common in this verse again? OH RIGHT, Cryptids and Mythological monsters! Kur would immediately be able to take control of a planet's worth of powerful witch level monsters and lead them as a hive minded army, using monsters like the Magic Absorbing Ancient Dragon, or the Time Distorting Time Demon to completely overwhelm the magic users overtime. If the Witches DID get to Kur it still likely wouldn’t go well for them, as any source of magical energy dramatically boosts Kur’s already insane power to new heights.

The only thing in this verse that Could stop Kur is sealing him within the Layline Dimension, or an endless time loop, both of which are unlikely. It Would however, take a rather long time for him to defeat someone like Woodward though due to her nature. For someone who could completely clean house in this verse, I got just the character for the job...

Natsu Dragneel:

Yup, Natsu freaking Dragneel from Fairy Tail. Natsu would be extremely powerful in this verse, his physical feats include fighting a Dragon that literally pulled the entire ocean into the sky using only half its power, and keeping up with Erza, who in a severely weakened state with 2 broken legs, could still jump into the air at sub relativistic speeds comparable to a meteor pulled from deep space. So needless to say he can compete with this tier in stats. Natsu is a powerful Celtic Wizard and Warrior skilled enough to match Erza, who once outskilled a character that can sever all the nerves in the human body without cutting their skin or clothes in a single slash, a skill level that puts even Amanda to shame.

Natsu’s primary magic is Fire Dragon Slayer Magic, which grants him all the powers of a Fire Dragon, and thus allows him to harm Dragons with his magic, despite them being impervious to magic normally, Meaning the Ancient Dragon would NOT be able to defend against Natsu’s attacks like it can with the Witches. On top of this, Natsu’s fire is not normal fire, but Dragon fire, which he can generate and control in any conceivable way. It can be added to his physical attacks, launched as projectiles, controlled from a distance and even formed into a solid or liquid like logia substance that can physically interact with things. He can absorb fire from any surrounding source other than himself, use it to fly, and even generate lightning attacks. Natsu’s Flames get stronger with the passion of his emotions, in his higher modes like Dragon Force, which he can enter at will, his fire burns so hot it Literally Burns Away the literal magic his opponent is trying to affect him with. This allowed him to continue moving when Sting tried to Paralyze him, Break through dimensional space when Zero tried to BRF him to Hell, Free himself from Zeref’s Umbrakinetic Bindings, charge through Zeref’s Death Hax, and attack Dimaria when she literally Stopped Time. So Needless to say this magic burning aura is a bit of a trump card against a lot of the abilities in this verse, at the very least preventing their spacetime and bodily manipulation hax. But it doesn’t really stop there, Natsu has Massive Super Senses, allowing him to See, Hear and Smell things from literally hundreds of miles away, and predict his opponents moves, powers like invisibility and illusions are not going to work. He can even enter into an Ultra Instinct like state and fight someone completely without any conscious thought. He drank a water potion that allows him to breathe underwater, he has massive poison resistance that let him shrug off the extremely hazardous poison of Cobra, and he learned the ability to make mental projections of himself from Mavis, which allowed him to physically beat up ghosts. Also Natsu has been able to somewhat resist having his magical power taken away in the past, coupled with his Extremely high emotions and willpower, I cannot see him getting his magic stolen. But how would he beat Woodward? Well At his most powerful, his Fire was able to Burn Time itself, and this allowed him to defeat Fairy Heart Zeref, knocking him down and paralyzing him, we know this is acausal fire, as Fairy Heart Zeref’s body was shown to be able to heal from being vaporized like nothing just by rewinding time to before he got hit, but he couldn’t rewind time to heal here cause it hurt him throughout time. So this would Hit Woodward, during the Blue Moon, no matter WHEN he did it.

Stellar Level:

So here we have essentially the God Tier of the verse, Yggdrasil itself. Yggdrasil, or world tree is an enormous, sentient magic tree, connected to every part of the Earth, and holding up every Star in the Heavens. It is the world changing magic, that supplies magic power for every part of the universe, and is capable of moving from the Earth to the Big Dipper in about 4 seconds, which is about 4 Billion times the speed of light. So Universe level Billions is where we will set the limit. Every Branch of Yggdrasil is technically a portal across spacetime called a Leyline. The Tree can also self resurrect itself, make pocket dimensions, control nature, warp reality, and logically use any ability from the previous tier.

Long story short, most of the obstacles and strategies of the previous tier would still apply here to stop this thing, but on a greater scale. A Big disadvantage it has however is it is a singular entity, meaning if you were to simply absorb its power, you win! A good example of this would be.

Death Phantom:

Death Phantom from Sailor Moon. So Death Phantom is a Chaos Spawn capable of traveling hundreds of millions of times light and destroying solar systems. That's not nearly the power of Yggdrasil but he doesn't really need power. Death Phantom is the spirit of an evil criminal from the future possessing a Black Hole. He is capable of using the super gravity of this black hole to traverse across space time, and absorb all forms of matter and energy to grow larger. He would essentially be feeding off of Yggdrasil becoming more powerful using its very magic, and could not be easily stopped by any magic it has. Using things like his space crystals to distort spacetime around it to prevent it from fighting back, and his evil eye which potentially would allow him to actually control the entity itself.

Doctor Destroyer:
Suggested to me by Imp, Doctor Destroyer from the Champions Verse would also be an immense threat to Yggdrasil, he is the top tier villain scaling above the feats of other big name baddies that could create universe seized dimensions and react to flying a starship at Billions of times Light. Destroyer is a Super genius who also has advanced Mind Hax and the ability to hit non physical extra dimensional entities. He can also fly, teleport, create and bypass force fields, detect sources of high power and his Synaptic Interference Generator can mess with a brain's abilities to use powers or energy, or drain away all a normal universe’s matter-energy and essence.

Yami:

But if this is an Energy Draining contest, there's not much better option than Yami from Okami. While he cannot compete in power, he CAN compete in speed, and its resistance to spacetime hax means there isn't much Yggdrasil can do to stop it before it begins using its devastating energy draining. Once he absorbs some powers, he can also use them himself too, which means he could use the verse’s OWN anti Magic abilities on a cosmic scale to prevent Yggdrasil from retaliating until it wins. Fear the demon ball, it comes for thee.

  1. You finally did a magical girl blog, I see I'm rubbing off on you ;) Wow Thor this blog seems like it must have taken an absolutely insane amount of work, the sheer list of powers on the first tier seemed like it was just including everything you could imagine and I would have no idea where to start trying to counter all that, save maybe with anti-magic. I definitely didn't remember it having all of these abilities when watching it; things like being unable to effect an enemy except during a blue moon, 4th wall effects, existing completely outside of time, sending people inside each other brains, magitech, it's a massive list of abilities. I have to confess, I usually abridge when I'm talking about abilities to just talking about the most dangerous or notable ones but you really took the time and effort to list every ability the tier had.

But that obviously leads into the fact that you had to counter that monstrosity. I find it funny that for the first tier I knew every counter kind of, but none of the counters really. It meant that for each one I had a similar feeling of "jeez I didn't remember/wasn't aware this character got THAT hax". This is especially true for Natsu. Things like his fire burning through time were things I distinctly recall you telling me but seeing it in usage is really something. His fire manipulation goes well beyond what you would normally think of for fire manipulation and his stats go higher in the shonen hierarchy then people realize.

But my favorite part of the blog despite it's brevity was definitely the second tier. It being shorter I think made it a lot easier to focus on one part and get your brain around it. The way you describe Yggdrasil kinda makes me want to do a Tree Death Prediction of Yggdrasil vs Shinju. ;) But you weren't just picking a good fight, you had to pick counters to it, which essentially means countering all that power list again but with more.

Well I'm really happy for the choices you picked. The fact that Champions, a verse I think is underratedly cool was my least favorite of the three verses really says something. Okami is a game series I love and holds a special place in my heart and Sailor Moon is just my favorite series ever. The counters you picked were all classic hax picks; given Destroyer's technology-based abilities he's the one that is oddest to imagine here, even if he does have energy-draining. The other two feel more fitting being a mythological cosmic and a magical girl villain. Death Phantom's energy draining and Yami's power stealing were both cool ways to counter Yggdrasil's abilities, and it was a good way to take advantage of their only being one enemy.

I can tell this blog was a lot of work and it really paid off, I'm looking forward to whatever you release next.

  2. This is an excellent blog. Really shows your knowledge of vs debating when you had to counter THAT many powers in the first tier. This series really is jam packed full of magical abilities and even counters to said abilities. From a general standpoint I can really see why you like Little Witch Academia so much; I don’t know how to describe it exactly but it’s vibe is really you with its playful use of witchcraft.

The counters were cool and somewhat unexpected. I would have never guessed Natsu would be able to counter everyone in the country tier but you made a really good case with his skill, his absurdly versatile uses of the dragon slayer fire, super senses, etc. Kur was also a pretty cool counter, being able to use the verse’s cryptids against them.

The Stellar level seems simpler counter in comparison to Country level. I think you chose a nice variety of counters. I really like your strategy with Yami absorbing the verse’s anti-magic abilities and using them on a much higher level against Yggdrasil, in addition to the general strategy of energy draining.

  3. LWA! Would ya believe it if I said I haven't seen it? This blog just gets me more stoked to check it out one day. I usually expect series with a focus on magic this strong to be powerful and I was not disappointed at all. The scaling creates an incredibly strong baseline for the bottom tier, a strength that's somehow exceeded by its versatility. Yeah, yeah, magic is basically the "do anything" power but verses still get limited by what they show their magic actually being able to do. This one covers soooo much, great job detailing the catalogue of spells here.

You had me wondering what sort of counters you'd bring to the table; what could handle all that? Well Palutena shut a lot of that down outta the gate with stealing and denying powers and utilizing death hax. I should've noticed a lack of instant death resistance earlier, it's a nice little weakness to exploit here. Kur is where things got really OP for me, that thing is a world-ending living disaster! I love it. Kur would be my favorite counter here if it wasn't for your next one, Natsu! Dude's magic gives me mad Saint Seiya vibes, how his literally burning will can burn anyway anything! Burning time is so freaking cool. Er, hot? Whatever. Being pretty much immune to magic plus able to affect other things that are immune to magic with your own magic turns a mage verse into a playground.

For starting off with a strong first tier, that next step's a doozy! Definitely one of the most powerful trees I've heard of. When something's weakness is "well, at least there's only one of it", you know it's OP. And you needed to find at least three characters that are OP to THIS thing? I'd wish ya good luck, but you already did it. Death Phantom, Doctor Destroyer, Yami. Looks like the key to beating this tree is fittingly similar to what the pests that devastate real life trees do: suck the life out of it. "Life" being power, or magic, or energy or what have you in this case. Sounds like Yami's got the strongest "suction" so to speak, I liked that trick of effectively reversing anti-magic on this verse. Death Phantom's my favorite out of this tier's counters though, and that's mostly personal bias for liking the character, but the other part is how he/it absorbs not only every form of energy, but matter as well. He'd make a salad outta that tree! And that right there shows me you've succeeded in this blog's mission, well done Thor! Thanks for the blog, I like LWA even more now.
