Universal Classic Monsters VS Strategy Guide

Good Evening and Happy October Everyone, anyone who knows Me knows that I tend to get a little Crazy Excited this time of the year, so I thought a good way to Celebrate this year was to kick off a Monster Month on my blogs. Every Saturday this Month, we will have a New Horror Themed VS Strategy Guide just ripe for the occasion! And what better way to start than at the Beginning with Universal Classic Monsters! This Series is nearly a Century Old at this point and is known for setting the Standard for Classic Halloween Monsters and Imagery, I’ve covered it many times in my blogs in the past, but now it's time to look at the verse holistically and ask ourselves an important question, how does one become OP here?

Building Tier:

Ahh the spooky, black and white world of Universal Monsters, with its orchestral music, deep cinematography and classical tone, it set the standard for Halloween as we know it. Universal is populated with numerous creatures pulled from classic novels, Edgar Allen Poe stories and mythologies, mixed in with a great deal of Sci-fi and Chiller type beings of their own design, Beastpeople, Undead Ghouls, Mad Scientists and Murderers of all shapes and sizes fill this tier. The monsters found in this tier average at Large Building Level, due to feats performed by Kharis or the Gillman such as collapsing part of a large stone temple with the force of his walk, or nearly capsizing a ferry boat with the force of his swimming respectively. Similarly several monsters in this tier are fast enough to keep pace with cars and motorized boats, the Gillpeople can swim ocean spanning distances in less than a day, giving them subsonic movement speed.

A lot of monsters in this tier have enhanced survivability, often having things like durable armored plates and some degree of healing factors. The most difficult to kill entity in this Tier is the Mummy, Kharis, whose undead body is animated purely by Tana fluid and can continue moving seemingly unaffected by damage, requiring one to completely destroy his body to stop him for good. Kharis can also bind foes with wrapping manipulation as a way of reducing someone's mobility. On the more offensive side, McCormick, the electric man, can instantly electrocute anyone to Death on contact, and absorb electrical energy from his surroundings. Characters like the numerous Invisible people, such as Griffin, are obviously invisible and are very stealthy as a result, while meanwhile characters like Kharis and the Gillmen have super senses that can help them track down other characters who are using stealth. Members of the Gillmen group of extraterrestrials on the other hand are semi aquatic beings who can have potent psychic attacks, able to control elements like Earth, Air and Water, create psychic force fields and temporal barriers that prevent time travel, and even pull energy out of others to drain their life away. However the vast majority of offensive powers at this tier are mental plane attacks, Gillmen are able to read someone's mind and memories, mind control up to 20 people at the same time, and literally destroy biological material, enough to reduce someone to a puddle with a touch. Additionally, Kharis has a fear aura that is potent enough to drive someone insane or even kill a person out of sheer fright. Having strong mental defenses will likely be a requirement to compete in this verse.

So what weaknesses does this tier possess? Well Griffin and the Gillpeople are fairly intelligent and skilled, with good stealth and stamina feats, but something none of the characters in this tier are very good at is Range. The vast majority of Universal monsters kill their victims up close and personal with physical attacks, and even the vast majority of their more esoteric attacks are only really effective at close or medium range, with the only real exception being the Gill-People's mental attacks, but even those increase in effectiveness the closer they are to the target. Having long range or spacing type abilities would go a long way here. Characters like Kharis and The Mad Ghoul depend on a steady fuel supply to animate themselves. Additionally a lot of the characters in this tier are sensitive to extreme changes in the elements, particularly extreme heat and cold, which could dry out or immobilize them. With that in mind, let's get to the counters.

Commander Montón:

So first off, I think a lot of this tier’s powers get countered simply by just not being an Organic Entity, so I give you none other than Commander Montón from Monster Lab! Montón can well scale past the player scientist, who can tank a castle shaking explosion every time an experiment fails, and while not a physical speedster, he can at least React to Hypersonic characters with relative ease. Montón is the Commander of the Junkstack’s robot forces, as a robot himself, he does not feel fear, have a mind to take over, or have any biology to decay, and since his body is made of Metal, the telekinetic creatures would not be able to influence him. The Commander has radar detection of his surroundings to quickly locate the Invisible Men should they make a move, teleportation tech that would allow him to maintain distance if attacked, and like a crap ton of junk weapons that he could use to lay down ranged fire with, including flamethrowers and missile launchers, which would be good enough to let him quickly dispatch any of these characters rather fast. It would be extremely hard for anyone at this tier to deal with the experienced Montón, as he has the range advantage, they couldn’t sneak up on him, and he could quickly regain lost range. That said should they manage to overwhelm him, The Electric Man or the Weatherpuller Gillmen could potentially short him out with their powers. For a less direct option.

The Beast:

Well since we're going classical Horror, how about The Beast from Over the Garden Wall? The Beast scales largely above characters like Wirt and Greg who could walk the two mile distance to Pottsfield at a superhuman speed, and the corrupted dog from episode 1 that could collapse a watermill with its body, meaning he's more than able to compete here. The Beast is a Wendigo, a creature from Native American Folklore who results from resorting to cannibalism, his will to survive allowing him to persist above all else. The Beast’s body is that of a sentient Adlewood Tree, which would not be susceptible to many of the types of attacks that could be thrown its way, the Electric Mans Electric attacks cannot pass through Insulated Wood, and he would be especially durable against the binding and elemental attacks they may try to throw at him. Even if they do deal damage to The Beast, his body is merely a vessel as his true self is contained within the Dark Lantern he always carries with him, as long as the flame stays lit he can just come back. The Beast can likely shrug off the mind manipulation attempts from The Gillmen, as not only is he a plant, but he also has a very strong will, something the Gillmen’s telepathy struggles against, and similarly would not have been able to be controlled by Auntie Whisper’s Bell. The Beast also has powers such as Illusions and Umbrakinesis that can allow him to get the drop on stealthy enemies and take them by surprise in a direct fight, but the Primary ability of The Beast is to turn those who have lost hope into trees in order to be used as kindling for his Lantern. Universal Monsters are extremely tragic Figures, either good men who were driven mad or misunderstood creatures persecuted by a world that doesn’t understand them, thus they would all be extremely vulnerable to this kind of attack, and it is something that can work outside of any of their effective combat ranges to get the win. That said The Beast might struggle with The Invisible Men in battle due to his more lacking super senses, since he lives in a forest it's unlikely they could move around without disturbing the brush but if they knew his weakness all they would need to do is blow out his lantern, for a safer bet.

The Green Slime:

Yes the Green Slime from the 1960’s British monster movie of the same name would be extremely Overpowered in this tier. This Slime is essentially an alien species composed of individual cells that consume electrical energy to survive. Even a single Cell of this substance can quickly multiply at a rapid pace by consuming energy, eventually becoming a full sized alien creature and can even multiply itself to quickly create a small army of these creatures. The Green Slime is more than fast enough to keep pace with humans on jetpacks, as well as endure the force of being sucked out of an airlock into the vacuum of space, allowing the individuals of this force to compete with the monsters here. The Slime Creatures are a hive-minded alien race that is based on impulse and not thought and thus is unable to be affected by the Gillmen’s mind manipulation or the fear aura of Kharis, and their entire body is capable of producing powerful electric pulses that can fry anyone to death upon contact, something that should be able to seriously harm anyone in this tier that tries to contact them. Because the Aliens feed upon energy, they can absorb any of the distance attacks that are thrown their way, take in the psychic energy of the Creatures barriers and completely drain the Electric Man of his own power. Similarly they would have no problem tracking down their stealthy prey of this tier, as they have the ability to sense people's Bioelectric Aura, meaning not even The Invisible Man could sneak past them. While Kharis would be difficult to bring down he would inevitably fall to them in a prolonged fight, as they can heal themselves while he would just accumulate burn damage until he goes down. The biggest threat the Slime would face at this tier would be the Fleshmolder Gillmen using their decay hax, but even that is a flawed strategy as it would require them to get into physical contact with these walking lightning rods, and since they can regenerate from mere cells overtime and split off from the main body to duplicate anything short of complete cellular destruction at a rapid pace is not going to stop them.

City Tier:

Here we have the bigger name monsters of the verse, the Iconic Monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein and The Wolfman, as well as various other Werewolves, Vampires and creatures from The Mummy TAS. One of the beings in said series was a wind Demon that could wipe out an entire city all at once with its power. This is consistent with the Frankenstein Monster tanking the epicenter of an explosion that destroyed Frankenstein tower, which was stated to be capable of “blowing everyone inside to atoms.” Frankenstein is held in much higher regard than any of the creatures from the animated series so should scale above their power too. This is also consistent with Dracula being able to create a hurricane like Storm on his ship. Speed wise, In The Ghost of Frankenstein, Frankenstein was able to move himself into the path of a natural Lightning Strike, and he’s not exactly a speedster of the verse, with the various Vampires and Werewolves clearly being portrayed as faster in their interactions.

So a big factor in this tier is just how difficult the characters are to kill, even the Frankenstein Monster is regarded as effectively immortal, able to survive being thrown in a burning sulfur pit, sinking in quicksand, being frozen in ice, twice, shot through the heart, 3 times, and even had his brain completely removed and replaced by a new one, only for his body to override this new brain into a copy of the old. Beyond him though, Werewolves can pull their body back together even after being blown to pieces, and Vampires can regenerate their body in seconds from just their skeleton and additionally can turn intangible to stop physical attacks from damaging them in the first place. Vampires and Werewolves also of course have the ability to spread their curse to others by biting them, potentially increasing their numbers. The Gogel is a demonic fear creature that can create insane illusions of one’s greatest fears and take control of the surrounding environment, the more it terrifies its foes, the stronger it gets. There is a flying fire breathing dragon, a super powerful minotaur, and a giant fire scorpion. The dark medjai has numerous dark powers including pyrokinesis and the ability to summon undead dog creatures and the harpy sisters can Bodily control men, and can seal objects in stone. But by far the most dangerous character you’ll have to deal with at this tier is none other than Count Dracula himself. He can fly, turn invisible, shapeshift into animals, use telekinesis and summon fire at will. He can turn his entire body into Smoke to gain logia abilities, or infect someone with his blood to possess them from beyond the grave. But Dracula’s best ability is his mental hypnosis, which allows him to with merely a glance, take control of someone’s mind, drive them insane, induce unconsciousness, create potent hallucinations, and even seal their mind into his ring to trap them in a dreamlike state.

So what would be some effective strategies in this tier? Well in the words of the Monster Squad, you Need Silver Bullets and Wooden Stakes! Yeah the Universal monsters are classic in every way, including popularizing the very things that let humans combat them in all of fiction since. Most monsters in this tier have built in weaknesses, and the more dangerous they are generally the more potent and numerous these weaknesses are to balance out. Frankenstein is fearful of Fire, Werewolves cannot cross Wolfsbane flowers, and Vampires can be harmed or warded off by Garlic and Holy Items such as Holy Water and The Cross. Silver is the ultimate weakness of Werewolves, as in classical Alchemy, Silver came from The Moon and can therefore disrupt the Lunar centric Curse they are under. Any attack from Silver will seriously injure a Werewolf even if performed by someone far weaker, and it will nullify their regeneration. Causing a fatal injury with Silver is the only way to permanently kill a Werewolf in Universal. Vampires on the other hand can be killed in two ways, one is by Driving a Wooden Stake into their Heart, which works because you are destroying the source of their blood with the holy material Christ died upon, and the other is to expose them to Sunlight which will instantly reduce the creature of the Night to a Skeleton, as the Daylight reveals what they truly are, dead. Vampire weaknesses are all Absolute and cannot be countered by them. A Vampire cannot simply mind control someone holding a Cross or use Intangibility to phase through the Stake as they literally nullify their dark powers. So with this in mind, one character I believe would work well here is,

Levy McGarden:

Levy from Fairy Tail was able to help Cana and Lisanna take down Kain Hikaru, a dude who was stronger and comparable in speed to Pre Timeskip Natsu, who could level mountains and dodge lightning, and by this point in the series she would be more than on par with that version of him, putting her on equal footing with the Monsters in this tier. Because Levy is female, the Bird Women’s bodily control spell would not be able to affect her, and she could easily shrug off other attempts at mind control with her Windreader Glasses. Levy is a genius who is extremely well read on a wide variety of subjects and thus would be privy to the classical weaknesses of Lycanthropes and Vampires, and she is more than prepared to capitalize on this. Levy’s Magic is called Solid Script Magic, which allows her to materialize words that physically represent what they describe. For example if she were to make the word ‘Silver’ it would summon it as a giant 3-Dimensional word, which is actually made of pure Silver, and she could then use it as a melee or projectile weapon against her foes. Solid Script Magic is actually one of the most versatile types of magic in the series, she can summon any element or material, or functioning weapons, vehicles and objects, as well as use it for more hax abilities. She can make invisible force fields with ‘Guard’, spatially open bottomless rifts in things with ‘Hole’, and directly slice creatures in half with ‘Sword’. Technically this means Levy could counter any strategy they tried on her, as words like ‘Truth’ or “Reveal’ should stop the Gogel’s Illusions or Dracula’s Invisibility, when it comes to things we've directly seen her do, she can summon impressive fire attacks using ‘Fire’ make elements like Wood or Garlic with the word, and use a wide variety of Light Spells, one of which, “Shine” is explicitly stated to be Holy Light that harms demons which should more than be able to kill Dracula. Levy may have the means to easily dispatch the monsters of this tier, but as she could only do this to one monster at a time there is still a danger of getting overwhelmed. For another choice, how about.

Elsa Bloodstone:

Hailing from Marvel, Elsa Bloodstone is a badass Vampire Slayer, whose superhuman abilities granted to her by the bloodgem, have let her beat up lightning timers like Deadpool and Electra at the same time, and go head to head with Jessica Jones, who has been able to battle City Busters like Luke Cage and Spiderwoman, meaning she’s more than capable of physically fighting the foes here. One of Elsa’s greatest assets in this tier is her sheer skill, she’d be far more skilled in combat than any of the monsters at this tier, so even if multiple of them tried to attack her at once she’d still not be in too much danger, especially when considering that Elsa’s Bloodgem can repair her body even if it was completely destroyed, so long as her gem remains intact, she cannot be put down with physical force alone. But the Bloodgem is good for more than just that, it also shields Elsa’s mind from mental obstructions like mind manipulation and illusions, which is good enough to work in the Marvel Universe so you know that none of the mind stuff here is going to touch her. It also prevents her from being turned into a Vampire, dispels Curses like Lycanthropy and allows her to use cool red energy attacks. Elsa also carries a variety of guns, explosives and blades to deal your standard one man arsenal damage, though ironically her best weapon for this fight is the magical amulet, Mordred’s Causeway. Mordred’s Causeway grants its user the ability to warp space, allowing for teleportation, substitution and opening of spatial portals that can travel anywhere on the planet or into other realms. With this, Elsa could easily just, move any fight she has with a Vampire or Werewolf to the other side of the planet where it is Daytime and instantly kill the Vampire and revert the Werewolf back into their human state, which is an instant GG. That said, Elsa ironically doesn’t seem to carry Wooden Stakes or Silver on her, which could make killing the werewolves in particular more difficult, that's why for my ultimate choice,

B.B. Hood:

Baby Bonnie Hood from the Darkstalkers series would absolutely excel at this tier. Bonnie is capable of going head to head with Blood Moon Jon Talbane in a fight and bringing him down, and he was able to tear through the City-Nuking Huitzil Drones in a weaker state, she could also easily keep pace with an early Lilith, soon after she had physically flown from London to New Orleans in under a minute, meaning she could easily keep up with the monsters here in stats. B.B. Hood is a Darkhunter, a superhuman Monster Slayer in the Darkstalkers world, who makes her living collecting bounties on classic style halloween Monsters that are BASED on Universal. Bonnie’s skill is through the roof, easily able to fight a wide variety of powerful monsters despite being a 14 year old girl, she's an expert tracker, fantastic strategist and comes into battle completely armed to the teeth with a crapload of hidden weapons. She carries submachine guns that EXCLUSIVELY Fire Silver Bullets, as well as Flamethrowers, Mines, Missiles that track her target, Wooden Stakes, Grenades and a hunting knife coated in Garlic and Holy Water that can harm Vampires, as well as much MUCH more. Bonnie’s soul is stated to be more dark and terrifying than a Darkstalkers by Jedah himself, enabling her to reverse fear hax the Gogel, and shrug off mind manipulation. B.B.’s dark magic allows her to manipulate size, turn herself and others invisible, teleport, open portals, hit intangible enemies, create tornados, levitate and even make an entire forest of decoys of herself. All of these powers would be incredibly useful against the monsters of this tier, yes, but I think the most useful thing B.B. Hood has at her disposal is her classic deception, of making her target believe shes just a helpless adorable little girl, so they go in thinking her easy prey until it is far too late. Yes in Universal, Bonnie is going to collect a LOT of bounties.

Planet Tier:

This tier is host to only one Monster, the most powerful and Final Boss monster of the series, the Undead Egyptian Sorcerer, Imhotep! Imhotep’s power is basically unmatched in Universal, with the only characters more powerful being the Actual Egyptian Deities, who personally I don’t feel we have enough info on to include in this blog. Anyway, with his Telekinesis, Imhotep was able to rapidly move the Moon into the path of the Sun to cause an eclipse, a feat which given the size of the Moon and speed of which it was moving would put it into the Large Planet level Tier with ease. Speed is more interesting to consider, In my original Blog Imhotep’s best direct speed feat was turning into a Sandstorm and traveling from London to Cairo in under an Hour, an approximate speed of Mach 3, however given how he was clearly moving the Moon at Massively Hypersonic Speeds of roughly Mach 170, its likely he could at the very least fling objects or fly at these speeds as well to fight. So we could say Massively Hypersonic, Large Planet Level for the stat limit here. Imhotep is an all-power apocalyptic sorcerer who has control over the 10 Plagues of Egypt, the Elements, and numerous other spells. His undead body is incredibly difficult to kill, he can resist aging and decay, persist without food, water, rest or oxygen, and can instantly regenerate himself even if blow to pieces, making for a High-Mid healing factor. This all however assumes you can even manage to attack him in the first place, as Imhotep has multiple Auras that are emanating off his body at all times, including a Bodily Control Aura that prevents any human not of Ancient Egyptian bloodline from taking any aggressive action against him, even at gun range, or a Fear Aura strong enough to cause people to go insane or die of sheer fright. Imhotep’s powerful mind manipulation can let him instantly mentally enslave someone even from great distances, regress someone’s mind into the mind of themself in a past life, and even take mental control of the entire population of Cairo all at once. He has extremely precise control over numerous elements including Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, Lightning and Plants, and in addition to doing normal stuff these powers like summoning/manipulating it to make attacks and natural disasters, he can also do some more unorthodox things with them like Turn his own body into a Logia being composed of the element, teleport himself and others through the elements, or create a wide manner of living creatures composed of the element that can act independently of him. His control of the 10 Plagues of Egypt allows him to rain down flaming meteors from the sky, turn all of the liquid in Egypt into blood, and generate and control enormous swarms of Insects, and not just any Insects, Scarab Beetles capable of eating through steel, and reducing humans to skeletons in seconds. Plus he’s also got a handful of other handy tricks he can pull out, such as the ability to fly, use telekinesis, spy on people and events across space and time, raise armies of the dead, drain away someone’s life energy into himself, remotely inflict Death Hax onto someone, turn animals into monsters, and summon Shadow Demons that cannot be conventionally attacked. Imhotep is extremely intelligent and manipulative, and unlike a lot of previous universal monsters, lacks any serious weaknesses that allow weaker characters to defeat him. With the only things that were ever able to stop him at his full power being either spells that directly invoked the Egyptian Gods, or the Egyptian Gods deciding to intervene directly.

So what would be some effective Strategies for defeating Imhotep? Well there’s a few things that jump out at us. Looking over his arsenal it is very clearly focused heavily on offense, having only a handful of potent abilities for defense, and very little for mobility, with flight and teleportation that Both rely on his elemental manipulation being the only things that qualify. Similarly, while Imhotep has a number of ways to create or summon hordes of monsters to fight for him, none of those scale to his own raw power, so it’s a far cry from true duplication. If you have a particularly mobility or defense based character who had the means to get past his defenses, it wouldn’t be too hard to simply outmaneuver or outlast him to pull off a win.

Retro:

Experiment 210, AKA Retro from Lilo & Stitch would work well here. Jumba’s experiments are able to endure the collision of two planets smashing into each other like nothing, and scale to the numerous MHS feats of an early stitch including darting around lightning and running across an entire island multiple times per second. Experiments like Retro are artificially created biological bodies animated by a technological Powercell created by Jumba. As Retro’s lifesource is therefore technological, Imhotep couldn’t effectively use his Death Manipulation or Energy manipulating powers on him. The same thing is true for Imhotep’s Mental Hax, as all of Jumba’s Experiments are impervious to the Mental Manipulation of other experiments, including Checkers who could brainwash an entire Island all at once. Retro’s main ability is a power called Retrogression, by hitting a target with his tongue, he can reverse the progress and evolution of said thing and reduce it to its most primitive state. Turning a lamp into a Torch, a Drum of Oil into a full grown dinosaur and humans into primitive Cavemen. As Cavemen are Far more primitive than an Ancient Egyptian, Imhotep would be set back mentally to the earliest days of man, and lose his curse that empowered him with his apocalyptic power with just a single flex of his tongue, in which case he'd be doomed. It is possible for Imhotep to defeat Retro through a physical bout or by using his more direct powers like elemental manipulation or telekinesis. But given how resistant to the elements Jumba’s experiments are, the fact Retro only needs one solid hit on him, and that Imhotep has no real defense or mobility powers that would protect him or let him dodge last second, Retro getting him before that happens is going to happen the vast majority of the time. That said if you want someone Imhotep can’t just normally attack,

Yami Yugi:

Yeah as thematically appropriate as we can get here, Yami Yugi from the Yu-Gi-Oh series would completely counter Imhotep. Yami Yugi is the ancient spirit of the Pharaoh Atem possessing the body of his modern reincarnation Yugi Moto, meaning he would be completely immune to the Bodily Control Aura of Imhotep and would be able to resist his fear manipulation due to his impressive bravery against the likes of Panik and Bakura. Yugi couldn’t compete with Imhotep in physical power, however his reactions would be more than fast enough to avoid being blitzed by the sorcerer as it has allowed him to avoid natural lightning and various Duel Spirits. With this speed, in addition to the fact Imhotep isn’t one to kill strangers on sight, Yugi would be able to initiate Imhotep into a game of darkness, where Imhotep would have to defeat Yugi in a competition to destroy Yugi, and if he loses or tries to attack Yugi and therefore cheat, he would be subject to a Penalty Game, which considering the game of darkness can affect the entire universe and deal damage on the physical, astral and mental planes he would not be able to survive. Against Yugi in a Game of Darkness Imhotep does not have much of a chance, true he is very clever and intelligent and the Game of Darkness could be any type of competition, not just Duel Monsters, but Yugi is the literal King of Games, having some of the most insane feats of strategy and craftiness in all of anime, and has the power to control fate itself to give him the advantage. Yugi’s Millennium Puzzle also grants him the ability to resist magic, including the Mind Control of the Millennium Rod, which could control the entire secret society of Rare Hunters, meaning he could stop Imhotep’s mental manipulation. Imhotep could summon a variety of monsters to attack Yugi true, but Yugi’s Puzzle enables him to materialize Duel Spirits to fight for him, which are a lot stronger and could fight Imhotep directly, an Yugi also has the ability to seal Imhotep’s spirit into a card because he has a millennium item, something The Mummy would not be able to resist. Basically the only means for victory Imhotep has against Yugi would be to know about him ahead of time and hit him with a preemptive attack from a great distance away, which is quite unlikely, but if you are worried about that…

Aganos:

Aganos from the Killer Instinct series would really excel here. Aganos is an ancient Golem created to protect the world from evil, and has spent many centuries battling the Babylonian mummy Khan-Ra. He was strong enough to go head to head with Gargos and hold him off long enough for the hero’s to defeat him. Gargos is capable of flying from outer orbit to ground in only a single second and making a shockwave that cleared away all the clouds covering North America, which was calced in the hundreds of Exatons. Therefore Aganos should be able to compete with Imhotep, being faster but also a bit weaker. Aganos is like a living tank, the largest and most straight forward fighter in the entire KI cast. As Aganos is a Golem, an elemental being composed of Stone, he would be able to resist damage from many of Imhotep’s abilities such as Energy Draining, Death Manipulation, Insect Attacks, Bodily Control and more due to his lack of being a biological entity. But even past that Aganos has his own great array or resistances acquired from battling Khan-Ra for Eons. Khan-Ra’s Magic can allow him to control the sands on entire deserts, teleport himself and others great distances and casually mind control entire civilizations, all of which are direct equivalents to the geokinesis, teleportation and mental hax Imhotep has, and none of it was capable of effecting Aganos. Aganos is capable of physically interacting with intangible and logia beings such as Gargos’ Shadow Omen creatures from the Astral plane, enabling him to destroy Imhotep’s logia forms or Shadow Demons. Considering this means none of Imhotep’s hax or summons are going to work on Aganos, so his only option would be to physically destroy Aganos with his raw power. Except as seen in the Comic followup to the game, if Aganos’ body is destroyed he will simply regenerate himself using surrounding rocks, making him just as hard to permanently destroy as Imhotep is with his own regen. But unlike Imhotep, Aganos has a way around this problem thanks to his most potent offensive power, the ability to turn his foes to Stone! Petrifaction is an ability that Imhotep has never shown resistance to and is a perfect work around to his curse to seal this mummy away for good!

  1. Maybe it's because of how iconic these monsters are, but I really like how thematically fitting these counters are. We got three monsters, two Monster Hunters and two Ancient Egyptians to deal with the tiers!

  2. First day of October! It’s awesome to finally see a strategy guide for Universal Classic Monsters. Not to mention, this analysis includes stuff such as the Black Lagoon literature or the Mummy animated series so it is probably a more complete analysis than many other people would do. Right off the bat, the counters felt really thematic as many of the counters were either from horror or horror adjacent. It was cool to see how having a different biology than normal was a consistently good resistance in the Building Tier and Planet Tier. The Green Slime was an amazing choice for the Building tier; these beings feel so alien and dangerous that it would probably make the Universal Horror monsters feel like regular humans in comparison.

It was interesting to see Frankenstein be the benchmark for speed in the city tier, but it definitely makes a lot of sense with how slowly he’s normally depicted. B.B. Hood sounds pretty cool as a character and hilarious in how well she is equipped to deal with this verse with stuff like silver submachine guns (I guess it makes sense since these characters are so iconic she seems to be a character that was specifically made to counter these monster stereotypes).

I think the Planet Tier had my favorite counters. Retro has a really cool counter in the form of turning Imhotep into a caveman basically, but he also has a lot of things that people wouldn’t normally consider such as his planet level stats, technological lifesource, and mental resistances. Yami Yugi was thematically perfect, and it would be amazing to see him get into a shadow game with Imhotep. It’s even more amazing considering the fact that he can’t compete in physical power, just a variety of options. And Aganos just feels like an utter tank, that was made to specifically fight beings like Imhotep.

So overall, a great start to the month! I even learned a few things I didn’t know before such as the meaning behind the wooden stakes killing vampires.

  3. Happy October Thor! And a fantastic way to start the month off with the birthplace of pretty much all Horror Tropes! The Universal films are really interesting to analyze as a verse, being arguably the first shared film universe and it's really interesting to see what tendencies to repeat in the powers of the verse such as the fear aura or mind control, as well as common resistances such as being not made of biological material.

The first tier I could definitely was going to be tricky and I would not be surprised if it was the trickiest given the difficult stat combination, not helped by the Gilmen and their strange esoteric abilities like mind hax and decay hax. I was surprised by the Beast to be sure, but it's really cool how thematically the characters in the tier are the hopeless and the Beast has specifically very strong hax against the hopeless. The other two characters I didn't know very much, but I thought they both sounded really cool, especially Green Slime which really gave the impression of this Silver Age Science-Fiction Monster replacing the old Gold Age Occult Monsters.

The middle tier was funny! I definitely didn't realize they got so strong and fast! It's very impressive, and with just my more clear knowledge of Dracula makes sense given the hurricane Dracula makes in both the novel and film adaptation. Speaking of Dracula, he's a boss in both versions! Such a ridiculous arsenal of abilities in both versions. His regeneration and sheer amount of mind haxes in the film is insane. But what I loved about this tier is the famous iconic weaknesses! It reminds me of when listing Superman's weakness in the DC Comics strategy guide and I got to write down Superman's weakness was Kryptonite. It just feels so cool to work with definitive iconic weaknesses like you got too! The counters were really funny in just how clearly they were aimed at fighting exactly enemies like the Universal Monsters. B. B. Hood is very clearly a character basically designed to be broken in a verse like Universal!

However the final tier was my favorite. If Dracula wasn't so darn stylish, Imhotep would probably be my favorite Universal Horror villain and he has such a creatively broken arsenal with Plague-themed powers and all his elemental powers and summons. Fighting such a powerful Egyptian Mythology villain was also really cool! I thought your observation his arsenal is almost totally offense-based was a good observation was a really clever one! Aganos sounds cool, and it's funny to imagine fighting Imhotep would just be same stuff as always, and Retro fighting Imhotep sounds pretty cute! However my favorite counter would be Yami Yugi! I love Yami Yugi and it would be so cool to see Yugi defeat this Mummy ala Anubis from the film. You said Imhotep has no weaknesses, but if he DID have one it'd be the Egyptian Gods, and Yami Yugi can summon them, beings strong enough to beat Imhotep! So in a way I think Yugi is his weakness.

Fantastic blog and a start to the Halloween season Thor! I thought your counters were very clever and I eagerly look forward to more from you!

  4. Yo, Happy Halloween! All of October is Halloween, as far as I'm concerned. And what better way to start off the month than with a monster mash! Man, I really need to check out the classics, your blogs on Universal monsters are always a blast and make the monsters sound so interesting. Loved the counters for the first tier, I appreciate you sticking to the horror theme with a robot from Monster Lab, the Beast from one of the best fall cartoons ever and an alien slime invader. Monton's robot anatomy giving him a lot of key immunities was great and I thought it was really neat how the Beast could take advantage of the tragic backgrounds of the Universal monsters with his ultimate power. The Green Slime was my favorite counter for the first tier though, because instead of using ranged tactics to stay out of reach of the melee-inclined monsters, it made them pay dearly for even thinking about touching it. Great counter for the tricky Invisible Man, too.

And then for the next tier, you switched from monsters to monster hunters! Well, I don't know enough about Levy to say she's a monster hunter as her main job, but her kit certainly seems good for it! That Solid Script Magic is soooo versatile, I dig it. Elsa's probably my favorite counter for this tier of stronger monsters though. And not just 'cause she's a looker! While I do have a fondness for badass female hunters, that bloodgem she takes her name from is so cool! At first I thought it was just a Madoka soul gem but it also comes with a host of other powers that are immensely useful against vampires and werewolves. And that amulet of hers that takes full advantage of vampires relying on nighttime and werewolves relying on the full moon? That's OP and a very clever counter right there. I agree that B.B. Hood is the most effective here though, holy cow. That statement Jedah Dohma made about how black her soul is is bone-chilling and while I knew she had a huge arsenal, her magic surprised me! Usually hunters rely on their tools and knowledge, and while she has plenty of that, the versatility of her powers elevates her to a new height of OPness! This verse doesn't stand a ghost of a chance!

...Unless you bust out the big dude himself, Imhotep. He REALLY feels like a final boss, it's like he can do everything a mastermind villain should be able to do. Good of you to highlight how unbalanced his offensive/defensive options are, so if you can find the right silver bullet to bypass his massive but simple defense, you got him. Retro might be my favorite counter here simply because I love how OP de-evolution hax is, and his is one of the best I've heard of outside of requiring physical contact. You could say Imhotep would get licked in a fight! :P Yugi is a fantastically thematic counter, take a bow for this one, dude. So many things about the King of Games shutdown Imhotep hard. Aganos though, man! One of the coolest characters you've introduced me to recently. Another very thematic counter, I love his kit and from how you describe how Aganos is in the game, I love his playstyle. Great defenses and I love how he can fuel his own regeneration through his petrification powers, one of the neatest sword & shield strategies I've seen lately. After going through Imhotep in such great detail multiple times in your blogs, I'm still shocked that you found petrification as a hax chink in his armor and nobody has the defenses on this tier built for delivering that hax better than Aganos! He'll make a fitting tombstone.

Thanks for the blog Thor, it was really fun seeing you tackle all the classic monsters at once! I'm looking forward to the rest of your spooky blogs this month!
