Darkstalkers VS Strategy Guide

Well hello there, It’s the 3rd week of Monster Month, and my birthday is tomorrow so I’m pretty hyped for this! So far this month, we’ve seen horror movies, and horror cartoons, so it’s only natural to complete my trifecta and cover a horror fighting game! But not just any horror fighting game, the best one ever made, Darkstalkers! Known as Vampire in Japan, Darkstalkers is a 2D sprite based fighting game franchise made by Capcom in 1994. It takes place in a spooky, superstitious world in the process of merging with the demon world Makai, and sports a diverse and freakish cast of monsters from all across the world and beyond, inspired by folklore, Cryptids, classic monster movies, and more! While it hasn’t had an official game released since the turn of the century, it has been kept alive through crossover games, Comics, Manga, Anime, a terrible TV show we all agreed to never speak of again, and its loyal fan base! So here’s my contribution as I tell you how to be OP there!

City Tier:

The Low Tier of Darkstalkers features the most common monsters and creatures of the human world. These relatively lower tier Darkstalkers consist mostly of cryptids that coexist with man, humans who became Darkstalkers through magic or curses, and the Dark Hunters that hunt Darkstalkers for profit. The characters at this tier are in the low to high city level range, from feats such as Felicia and Jon Talbane defeating the basic Huitzil drones that could destroy entire cities with their blasts. With the most powerful character here being Anakaris, a powerful Mummy who could telekinetically sink the city-sized Ancient Egyptian kingdom into the earth. Speed wise, these characters have been able to fight with and out speed Lilith Aensland when she was early into unlocking her powers, but this same Lilith was still casually able to fly from London to New Orleans in a very short time, which would be well into the massively hypersonic range, beyond that of lightning. Darkstalkers often have dark magical powers and constantly produce corruptive, evil energies that can turn people evil or drive them Mad. Numerous characters in this tier can shapeshift their bodies in numerous ways for disguises or creative attacks, wield powerful claws and teeth that allow them to cling to walls, and have really impressive super senses, such that they can even sense things like another Darkstalkers power or the Intentions of others at a wide range based upon scent. Catwomen like Felicia can use crazy attacks including using Sonic’s Spin Dash and generating a Sand projectile. Sasquatch and his entire tribe of abominable snow creatures have advanced Cyrokinesis that allows them to freeze foes on contact and form Ice Weapons. These Snowmen can also generate portals from Earth to the Demon World Makai, and summon Makai animals like exploding penguins and sentient Snowmen to fight for them. One of the most skilled characters in this tier is everyone’s favorite martial artist werewolf, Jon Talbane, who combines his Kung Fu skills and Lycanthrope powers to dispatch foes. He can regenerate from bullet wounds and blasts, create a fighting shadow clone of himself, and use Ki techniques to fly and blast a powerful fire dragon projectile. Talbane’s main rival in the series is the devious, deceptive Dark Hunter, B.B. Hood, a monster hunter who wields a massive arsenal of anti monster weaponry. Bonnie is an incredibly skilled fighter with a Dark Soul that allows her to shrug off a lot of the negative status effects that monsters can have on others, such as Corruption, Mind Manipulation and Insanity. She's got a slew of dark powers that allow her to teleport, turn invisible, float through the air change the size of objects, and manipulate Water and Air, plus a large arsenal of hidden weapons including missiles, bombs, guns, flamethrowers and blades. But by far the most dangerous character one would have to face at this tier is the ancient Mummy, Anakaris. Anakaris is one of the weirdest characters to play in all of fighting games having one of the most random assortments of powers and animations i've ever seen in one, he can turn himself into anything, levitate, use a crap-ton of elemental attacks, change someone's gender, split himself into two different beings and summon anything from meteorites to giant sarcophagus.’ Anakaris also has a lot more traditional and broken powers on the other hand, including the ability to manipulate and ensnare people in wrappings, broken Spacetime Manipulation that lets him create pocket dimensions, open portals, teleport and time travel, mind control, attack reflection, telekinesis and the ability to transmutate others into animals or even Stone.

So what are the best tactics to use against a verse like this? So at a certain point the main goal of this tier is mostly trying to counter Anakaris, whose hax abilities are easily the biggest threat to your characters personal safety. The thing about Fighting Games though, is that most of the powers found within the verse are close range powers that only affect the enemy immediately in front of you. What you basically need is a character able to fight from a long distance who can resist some of Anakaris’ most potent spells such as time travel. One such character I think could do this is,

Homura Akemi:

I think one character who could do a great job here is Homura in her basic hero state from Madoka Magica. Homura can compete with other Magical Girls who can fight witches that can destroy cities and fire arrows across Japan in seconds, putting her on par in stats with this tier. As a Magical Girl, Homura’s Body is nothing more than a vessel controlled by a gem on her body that houses her soul. Said Gem is the source of Homura and therefore any attack that doesn’t destroy it will not Kill Homura and she will eventually come back, thus meaning she likely can resist attacks such as transmutation and take tons of beatings from characters here and still survive simply because foes are very unlikely to attack her gem cause they don’t know what it is. Homura is an acasual being that can hop between timelines, making it impossible for Anakaris to defeat her simply by traveling to the past. Even more awesome, Homura can flat out Stop Time, which gives her a free shot to take down anyone who attempts to attack her at this tier, potentially letting her blow them up with large arms fire if need be. With that in combination it seems like she has very favorable odds against any of the foes in this tier she'd need to go up against. That said, Homura is far from the most skilled Magical Girl in the show, if she gets a surprise attack from a Yedi that freezes her in place it would likely take her awhile to escape. While this is unlikely, for a character who can better defend rather than recover,

Ratchet & Clank:

The main duo from the franchise Ratchet & Clank would be OP in this tier. While Ratchet and Clank only really directly Scale to Building Level MHS, they more than make up for it with their absurd arsenal of gadgets, as they would put it, “Always Outnumbered, NEVER Outgunned.” Ratchet can personally resist numerous of Anakaris’s best powers, like manipulating his mind or using transmutation on him, like he was able to do against foes like the Biobliterator, and Clank is basically a descendant of multiple Time Deities that would let him counter Anakaris’s own time travel and even just freeze everyone so that he can score free hits on them with basically anything he wants to use. He can fly and protect himself with Tesla Shields, Freeze the foes past absolute 0, transmutate them in no less than 8 different ways, use attack reflection to bounce their own attacks back on them, and even use things like a disco ball that forces their bodies to helplessly dance for him, and thats in addition to the fact that some of his guns can legit destroy planets and stuff, which would allow this glass cannon to basically oneshot anyone here. Honestly the only character in this tier I think could stop Ratchet would be B.B. Hood, and even then that's only if she cautiously convinces him she's a helpless little girl and gets lucky with a surprise attack. As unlikely as it is, for the best option,

Ai Enma:

One could realistically use Ai Enma from the Hell Girl franchise. Ai is roughly 100 times slower and weaker than this tier, but the fact is her powers would be unbelievable here. Ai is a ghost whose job is to banish foes to Hell in the name of vengeance and retribution, and in the bleak and monster fueled world of Darkstalkers she is sure to find quick work. Ai has numerous of the Tier’s most powerful abilities including Mind Control, Time Travel and Astral Transmutation, which all should work against most of the characters in this tier as a method for victory, but would be unlikely to work against her if she simply turns intangible or fights remotely from the Realm of Eternal Twilight. The primary ability of Ai is to seal a foes Soul into the depths of Hell. As all the creatures in this tier have souls that they need to survive and cannot easily escape from being seal in other dimensions as seen when Jedah pulled them into his Majigen, this is basically a universal oneshot move against the tier. She can also use various powers to ensure she has time to do this, like how her perception manipulation can casually make someone believe they are living out days or weeks of their lives in seconds, where she could get them completely opened and unsuspected. Ai Enma could truely bring judgment to this tier.

Planet Tier:

Above these creatures are the powerhouse monsters of Earth, beings who are regarded less as simple monsters and more regarded as Gods and Demons who manipulated ancient mythology with their presence. This tier also includes the most powerful Dark Hunters in the series, the ones who are part monster themselves which give them abilities vastly beyond those pure humans could attain. Characters in this tier were able to do battle with The Mortal form of Pyron who could destroy the Earth with his power. Speedwise, the true Huitizl was able to fly across the galaxy in a short time, which would put him over 100 Million times faster than light.

Speaking of Huitizl, he is an ancient Mayan looking killer Robot who is responsible for the extinction of the Dinosaurs, and wields a wide arsenal of deadly robot powers. His arsenal includes Flight, energy shields, laser beams, a freeze ray, missile launchers, machine guns, the ability to shapeshift his body into weapons, manipulating Magnetism to draw in targets, and firing a projectile that causes confusion and makes foes hover motionless in the air. Another Sub-Boss of Darkstalkers is the queen of the Soul Bees, Q-Bee. Obviously, Q-Bee and other soul bees are able to take and consume Souls as their primary food source, but as their queen, she has a lot of additional stuff to pull out in her arsenal. Her Bug-like makeup grants her flight and numerous hidden insect body parts she can use for attacks, as well as the ability to create complex illusions to disguise other Soul Bees as her to throw her target off. She can also summon and control huge swarms of Soul Bees, fire giant Stingers, produce massive globs of Makai Honey which is so sticky and durable it restrains them on contact, and Definitely most Disturbing of all, impregnate her foe with her own reincarnation, dying and growing a fresh body for herself inside of them in seconds before bursting out Alien style. One will notice powers like Flight, Teleportation and Shapeshifting/Elasticity are fairly commonplace in this tier. Rikou, the amphibious gillman, is able enhance himself with traits from numerous sealife, in addition to being able to use wide ranging Hydrokinesis, blasting damaging sonic waves, shooting poison gas, and being able to summon and control sealife from across the world. You also have Victor, the large German Frankenmonster, who combines his brute force with powerful electric attacks and the ability to summon the intangible ghosts of his family to fight by his side. Speaking of ghosts, one of the most major villains at this tier is the Demon Samurai, Bishamon. Bishamon is essentially a cursed set of armor and sword that saw so much bloodshed they became a Tsukumogami and now possess warriors who dawn them and drive them to commit mass murder to feed their bloodlust. Bishamon can use telekinesis, summon torture devices, fire ectoplasmic projectiles that possess foes, shoot fireballs, create ectoplasmic constructs to attack and absorb the souls of those he wounds with his Katana. There are two more characters that exist in this tier specifically to combat Darkstalkers, the most powerful Dark Hunters in the series, the first of which being Donovan Baine. As a Dhampire, or Human Vampire Crossbreed, he has incredible power and the ability to turn into a flying vampire creature, however as he hates his half monster nature, his primary ability comes from Buddhist magic he learned to dispel darkness. Donovan can summon a variety of elemental gods to fight for him, and also uses a deadly living Sword that can fly, teleport, and be used as a vehicle of distance weapon. You would also need to deal with Hsien-Ko, a super powerful Jiangshi who can walk through the air, use powerful energy attacks, and summon a literal infinite amount of weaponry, ranging from grappling hooks, bladed weapons, throwing weapons, a gong that can reflect attacks back to sender, and a wave of enormous blades that pop up from the ground. Hsien-Ko’s power largely depends on the amount of energy she draws from her sister Meiling, who fights alongside her. While this tier is Hsien-Ko’s average, when drawing her Maximum power she can even match the likes of Lord Raptor, which would be far above this tier, however it also runs the risk of completely destroying her in the process.

So what strategies would pair well with this tier? Well interestingly enough I have found the characters in this tier 1. Aren’t that crazy in terms of skill feats and 2. Don’t really have anything that prevents someone from just beating them to death. A character of a high skill tier is going to have a pretty fair fight against this tier as it is. That said there are still a great deal of haxy powers and projectiles they can throw at their opponent. Based on this one of the best things you can have is various kinds of Spacing abilities that can allow one to close the gap and remove the effectiveness of these non melee based attacks, such as super perception, force fields, telekinesis or attack reflection. One such character I think would do well is,

Litchi Faye Ling:

Litchi Faye Ling from the Blazblue series. Litchi is capable of going head to head with Makoto Nanaya, who could violently shatter the moon and keep up with the largely Faster than Light Hazama. Litchi is an extremely skilled martial artist and genius who uses a staff she possesses telekinetic control over. She is more than capable of going head to head with any of the characters here in terms of straight up combat, and is able to see into the future and even learn an enemies entire arsenal just by touching them, which would allow her to be extra proficient at avoiding attacks. Litchi can physically interact with intangible beings, and extract and destroy the souls of others. With this power Litchi should be able to defeat anyone at this tier as Darkstalkers are somewhat vulnerable to Soul Manipulation, and it would enable her to block Bishamon’s soul projectiles, take on Victor’s ghostly family, attack the elementals that Donnovan summons and even combat Q-Bee’s own soul manipulation. Litchi has resistance to numerous of the powers found within this tier including Rikou’s Poison, Soul Manipulation and Corruption. Really Litchi can just physically battle and defeat anyone in their tier with her skill alone and her powers basically make it so they cannot just stop her from doing that somehow, and the fact she can nullify regeneration with her powers only speeds up that process. The biggest threat to Litchi is Hsien-Ko bolstering her stats which is unlikely given its adherent danger to her. But for an even better counter,

Obi-Wan Kenobi:

Surprisingly enough I think Master Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Star Wars Legends franchise would do extremely well here. Obi-Wan scales past Jedi who can hold entire planets together and move a blackhole singularity, and is capable of fighting Faster than Light and seeing into the future. His reaction speed should be far superior to that of Han Solo, who in Force Awakens, managed to get through the StarKiller Bases planet wide forcefield by flying into the planet's Atmosphere in hyperspace, the speed that allows ships to fly across the entire galaxy in a Day, and stopping the ship before it crashed into the planet, requiring speeds millions of times the speed of light. As a Master Jedi, Obi-Wan has extremely strong manipulation of The Force, the external life energy of the cosmos that connects everything in the Star Wars universe. Obi-Wan can use the force to sense the surrounding environment to detect threats before they happen, which would prevent him from being snuck up on or sniped from a long distance. Better yet, The Force grants Obi-Wan an advanced form of Telekinesis, which Obi-Wan can use to shield himself from or misdirect attacks. Through this, Obi-Wan can basically just stop or avoid literally whatever distance attack they try and throw at him, nullifying basically all of Hsien-Ko’s weapons, Donavan’s elemental attacks, Rikuo’s hydrokinesis and even Bishamon’s spirit flames. This would force them to try and fight Obi-Wan up close and personal where Obi-Wan has a huge advantage in terms of skill and cutting power with his lightsaber. Obi-Wan can also see through illusions, and use techniques like Shatterpoint to target and crush any weak points in his foes which would completely devastate Huitizel in particular. He’s also got the Jedi Mind Trick which can be used to mind control beings. One could argue that many of the monsters in this tier could likely resist the mind trick, but something that certainly cannot is the simple minded Soul Bees and if Obi-Wan takes control of those Soul Consuming insects in large numbers, he could easily use them to take out basically everyone in this tier such as Victors intangible ghost summons or Bishamon as a whole. Obi-Wan could also stop Hsien-Ko from raising her energy with force draining, or even redirect energy attacks into different directions. Heck, while he hasn’t directly shown it, it's likely Obi-Wan can also use more advanced Force Techniques like Force Judgment, which fries those with malicious intent to death, or force healing to protect himself from injury if he does get hurt. Obi-Wan’s only real worries are things he's well equipped to guard against so as long as he doesn’t make a major mistake he's got this. But for the safest possible option,

Karin Miyoshi:

Yeah Karin would absolutely tear this tier asunder with her abilities. Karin, especially with her Mankai Form, is more than capable of destroying entire planets and moving faster than the speed of light. This means that she has comparable power but lacking speed compared to the verse, however she doesn’t really need Speed to win this. As a Hero System user, Karin has a fairy that generates an all encompassing shield around Karin’s body that automatically stops any attack that would do her harm, which even includes immensely powerful stuff like Supernovas and Blackholes beyond that this tier is capable of, meaning she has all the time in the world to just wait out their stamina, as she has INSANE stamina of her very own. Karin is extremely skilled and well trained and just all around a huge flippin badass that can use abilities such as extrasensory perception and calling upon a large exploding blade danmaku that would enable her to destroy the characters in this tier with little difficulty while they only guessed at what they even could use to hit her back. Karin can also use a purify ability that allows her to seal souls away, which would easily stop Bishamon for good and even sever the connection from Hsien-Ko to her powersource. So overall, it seems that this verse doesn’t have any major counterplay to Karin.

Galaxy Tier:

Beyond the human world entirely, in the demon world Makai, there lies monsters whose powers eclipses what meager humans thought possible, the masters of the demon world and high nobles. This tier's characters include the Alien god Pyron, who is essentially a sentient Galaxy in and of himself, as well as the Lord of the Nether, Jedah Dohma, who created and maintained a large Galaxy sized dimension known as the Majigan, which would easily make them Galaxy busters. Speed wise, these characters are able to fly millions of light years in only mere seconds, allowing them to travel Billions to Trillions of times the speed of light depending on character.

The powers in this tier really do step up their game, as numerous characters in this tier have powerful spatial manipulation, able to casually teleport, open extra dimensional portals, create entire spatial dimensions, and even seal other’s abilities to do these things. Other common abilities include perception altering powers such as advanced illusions, shapeshifting powers good enough to turn their bodies into a variety of weapons, and various types of mental manipulation, the best example of which being from Jedah, who’s mental abilities let him mind screw a sentient galaxy, and even telepathically talk to Anakaris 5000 years in the past. Soul Manipulation is also super common in this tier, with many characters being able to consume or empower themselves with them, Jedah, who keeps coming up, was able to steal the souls of the entirety of Makai at once, he can also transmutate souls into dimensions and gain the knowledge and powers of souls he consumes. Characters in this tier also tend to have Flight, Energy Draining and Absorption up to a galaxy wide scale, various force fields and projectiles, Transmutation powers that can alter gender or turn beings into objects, and the power to regenerate from massive injuries, by far the most impressive being that of the Jedah, who can regenerate from the concept of Death Itself, allowing him to instantly come back from being reduced to nothingness or having his Soul shattered across space and time. The Succubus Morrigan Aensland wields dark magics that allow her to manipulate lust, duplicate herself, control bat constructs, and fire shadow energy. Her sister Lilith draws similar abilities but hers are Holy powers, the light produced from Lilith is able to match the universal power of the Soul Chamber, and was similarly able to completely destroy Jedah and nullify his Regen to the point it will take him centuries to return. Demetri Maximoff can use pyrokinetic attacks, and the zombie Lord Raptor can attack using Electricity and sonic blasts. As a Zombie, Raptor can also raise the dead, and control his severed limbs, and both he and Jedah can manipulate or create Matter. The Alien deity Pyron is a logia being who is made entirely of burning celestial energy, any normal physical attack will pass harmlessly through him, and both he and Jedah have incredibly good telekinesis. Speaking of Jedah, he's a Shinigami and the most Hax character in the entire series, in addition to everything I’ve already mentioned he can also break holes in spacetime, sense things in other dimensions and use extremely powerful Hemokinesis that lets him attack foes with Blood. All that said, surprisingly the most powerful character in the series is Anita, Donovan’s little traveling companion. Anita is INSANELY OP, even as a little girl she has easily defeated Bishamon, Pyron and Demitri after absorbing Pyron, ntm she was able to get into a direct fight with Jedah as well. Years later as a teenager, Anita is so strong that Jedah fears he doesn’t have any win condition against her, implying none of the powers in this tier would even affect her. She generally uses advanced Esper powers, allowing her to seal entities away, empower others, and wipe entities from existence at the spiritual plane.

So what would be some good strategies to use? As one could probably deduce, this tier is fairly hax, it even has Jedah Dohma, one of the classic OBD Big 3 Broken ass characters from back in the day. Obviously one has to counter hax affecting spacetime and multiple planes of existence including physical, mental, astral and spiritual, but on top of that you need to have some way of killing a being that can come back so long as Death is a thing. But the good news is everyone of these characters does have some weaknesses. Lord Raptor needs a steady supply of souls to refuel his power, Succubus need to keep themselves stimulated to persist, and even Jedah can be destroyed by powerful enough Holy Light. A character who could manage to take advantage of these weaknesses or even turn their own powers against each other would do quite well here, one example I can think of,

Chakravartin:

We have another Capcom Classic, Chakravartin, the Creator, the main villain of Asura’s Wrath. Chakravartin was able to telekinetically pull the entire Milky Way galaxy towards him with only a fraction of his power, and scales well past the 6 armed Asura, who could fly to the center of the galaxy at speeds Billions of times the speed of light. As the God of Asura’s Wrath, Chakravartin is an incredibly skilled warrior with a manipulative mind. He's also the conceptual god of Mantra, which means it is very unlikely he's even vulnerable to trivial things like Soul and Mind Manipulation at all. Even if he is though, It wouldn’t do them that much good, as Chakravartin can stop time to allow him to basically get free attacks on anyone in this tier, or use his power of Possession to take over anyone in this tier, as Possession is blatantly different from Mind Manipulation it is unlikely they would be able to resist him doing this. Chakravartin can also break through dimensional barriers and forge pocket realities just like Jedah can to prevent anyone from BFRing him, or generate and manipulate energy to a similar degree as Pyron. He can also alter his own or others forms which serves as a counter to the matter manipulation. Chakravartin’s best power for dealing with this verse is the fact he Embodies and controls Saṃsāra, the cycle of life, death and rebirth in Hinduism. With this Chakravartin has advanced Life and Death Manipulation which could be used so permanently death hax the characters on this tier, and even potentially stop Jedah from ever coming back by stopping any future people from dying so that Death stops being a thing. That said that is more of a theoretical counter which is less of a direct permanent end to Jedah, and there are some powers in this tier that could possibly affect him, for a safer choice,

Amazo:

Someone who I think could well take down anyone in this tier is Amazo from DC Comics. Amazo is an advanced adaptable robot, whose body was originally an early Red Tornado Body, and thus should have the same stats. Red Tornado at the time could match a super early Hal Jordan, who was still capable of blocking Supernova’s and Black Holes with his force field and could keep up with Supergirl who could fly to the Source Wall in several hours, putting her Trillions of times the speed of light. With this Amazo could easily keep up with this tier in speed, but would still not be able to match them in raw power, that said, it still shouldn’t be a problem. Since Amazo is a robot, he’d already be able to resist lots of their most advanced abilities like Soul Manipulation and Mind Control, as he lacks either of those things and they have NO Technopathy abilities to compensate. But the greatest power at Amazon’s disposal is his ability to scan and copy others' superpowers. Just by looking at someone, Amazo is able to scan and flawlessly replicate their stats and abilities, which has even worked on countless Justice League members even more powerful than the characters found here such as Superman, Flash and Green Lantern. It doesn’t matter if their powers come from Biology, Magic, Science, Technology or from outside beings, Amazo can copy it. And a beauty of it is he doesn’t just copy one being's powers at a time, but all the people he’s ever copied at once, allowing him to wield the power, speed and arsenal of literally everyone he’s seen before. With this Amazo could quickly rise in power until he can basically stat stomp anyone in this tier, and use all their powers against them for some truly mind blowing counters. For example, Amazo could use Judah’s dimensional sealing to Trap Morrigan in a pocket dimension alone until she withers and dies from lack of stimulation, he could kill Jedah using Lilith’s holy light attacks, he could use Pyron’s absorption to stop Lilith from using that on him, and use Jedah’s batshit op Regen to survive anything else they try on him. Pyron may have very impressive Energy Draining, but he's not going to top the energy Draining of Green Lanterns that Amazo could still counter, and considering the only power in this tier that would allow them to effect Amazo back in time before he started gathering powers is Jedah’s transtime telepathy, which doesn’t effect Robots, they are forced to try and deal with him here and now. All this said, Amazo would be able to quickly take down every single character in this tier, the only real annoying thing is that he likely can’t kill Jedah permanently, only destroy him for centuries at a time. It seems like to perma kill a Shinigami, one might need a Shinigami. For someone who can truly stop everyone, check this out.

The Flying Dutchman:

Yup, The Flying Dutchman from SpongeBob SquarePants would be OP in Darkstalkers. The Dutchman is an incredibly powerful ghost pirate that haunts the people of Bikini Bottom, he also is the being tasked with collecting the immortal souls of those who die, essentially making him the series equivalent of a Shinigami or Grim Reaper. The Flying Dutchman scales significantly above SpongeBob, who was able to physically unravel the entire Milky Way Galaxy while traveling outside of it at speeds Billions of times lightspeed, so The Dutchman should be more than capable of fighting these characters. The Dutchman is an ancient ghost who is more than 10,000 years old and through this has developed an extremely hax arsenal of powers that make him one of the most dangerous characters in the entire verse. He’s got the standard Ghostly Kid of Flight, Intangibility and Possession that should allow him to avoid a lot of the more traditional attacks that this verse could throw at him, and Possession in particular is really powerful here as normal Mental Resistances do not protect from it, allowing him a way to take control of basically anyone he has to fight here, potentially letting him do the same strat that Amazo has of using the Verse’s characters against itself. But The Flying Dutchman's arsenal is far more advanced than just that, he can also Teleport, Shapeshift, use Telekinesis, breathe Fire, Shoot Lasers from his Eyes, turn his body into logia smoke, summon an army of ghost pirates and sense things from an interdimensional range, allowing him to see any attack coming before it happens. As a Grim Reaper figure, The Dutchmen is able to take the Souls of others and even destroy or seal them away. As seen through Jedah, basically everyone in this tier besides Jedah and Anita can be killed via Soul Hax, and the Dutchman’s is even more extreme. The Dutchman can control Matter completely, allowing him to Transmutate objects, resist transmutation from others, create matter and even Turn Spongebob and Patrick’s bodies into Astral plane Ghost bodies, making them into Souls and thus Giving the Dutchmen the ability to control them. One of the most Crazy Aspects of The Dutchman’s powerset is his deadly Spacetime manipulation, allowing him to travel through both Space AND Time completely untethered. He can Create portals to other dimensions and even entire Horrifying pocket dimensions like The Fly of Despair that he can seal foes in. His sealing is so strong that he was able to seal Spongebob in Davy Jones Locker indefinitely, and Spongebob is able to metafictionality travel on scene transitions so it's basically impossible for anyone in Darkstalkers to escape one of his seals with their own Spacetime powers. The Dutchmen is also able to escape his own sealing such as when he was trapped in Davy Jones’ Locker himself, and he too as shown the ability to Metafictionality move into the title cards of eps to jumpscare the audience, essentially giving him the option to move to a higher plane where any of their hax abilities will not be able to affect him. And even if none of that works, The Dutchman has shown Reality Warping abilities that make him capable of granting wishes like a Genie. He has used this to do things like turn himself into a Vegetarian, or make all Currency in the universe capable of speech. Potentially he could use this to just take away or alter the nature of anyone’s powerset, including even taking away Jedah’s regen powers altogether.

  1. I'm kind of shocked to see barely any Spongebob representation on any of your blogs, and now that The Dutchman is considered the Ultimate Counter to Darkstalkers, I'm so glad to see some of it (Even if I disagree with the stat combo).

  2. Great blog Thor! A lot of familiar faces for the counters this time! Darkstalkers is a pretty dangerous and scary verse to go up against, though you really weren't messing around this time. A lot of the verse counters here were from famously broken verses; Puella Magi, Hell Girl, Blazblue, DC Comics, even to a lesser extent Ratchet and Clank and Star Wars. If anything I feel surprisingly like the verses got LESS famously OP used as time went on, though that might just be people underplaying SB and AW's hax level. Really goes to show just how insane Darkstalkers is to fight, and you could really tell that despite the fairly normal stat combinations, the crazy abilities of this verse were really making it difficult. Typlical. Capcom.

I also noticed some other trends like the usage of ghosts and time stop a lot in this verse. The former maybe just because there's so much astral stuff in the verse already and the latter....idk but their time hax seems to include everything BUT that including sending telepathic messages backwards in time.

The first tier was honestly probably the most fun for me overall. I love when verses give a more unique challenge like having to fight enemies with time travel and several forms of offensive hax at a somewhat lower power level without being cripplingly difficult and requiring you to pick the most specific things you can find. Ratchet and Clank along with Hell Girl were both characters I was fairly familiar with when younger and I was really happy to see them both, filled me with nostalgia. But Homura was great! It says a lot that someone as insanely broken as her is only the FIRST counter here, though that might just be coincidence of how the verse is set up as I think she'd probably beat the others :P But yeah I love Homura, she's in my top 100 characters of all time.

I certainly didn't expect to see a character I liked even more in the second tier! Litchi and Obi-Wan were once again characters that I had some familiarity with and were cool to see, but Karin Miyoshi! Karin is a fantastic character and was super happy to see her. I'd have worried all the soul hax would have gone through her forcefield but you really brought to light just how strong a skill based counter would be here, and she even has the soul sealing to use on Bishamon! Overall it was pretty clever of you to note that while the tier was scary, they lacked some basic skills pushed to an extreme level.

I felt sorry for you trying to fight that third tier. Galaxy level already doesn't present that many options and this tier certainly doesn't make it easy. Jedah has one of the craziest largest hax arsenals ever, infamously so to the point he's considered a match for MAJIN Dark Schneider, yet he's not the first or even the strongest person in this tier. Pyron is a living galaxy with galactic absorbtion, Anita is just "an uber powerful psychic that can beat even Jedah" and worst of all Demitri has fire attacks! I do think your counters were really innovative. Chakravartin vs Jedah is always kinda a weird matchup to consider since Chakravartin does technically have a way of beating Jedah. The Amazo counter was a good idea. You don't need to have equivalent power if you just steal your opponents! But that last counter was especially great. When you said it was a Shinigami, my mind was racing trying to think who was another Shinigami at that tier. Turns out the perfect one was the Ghost Pirate and potential time traveler! I'm sure he'd make Potty proud here!

If I had one suggestion I would suggest making the counters section a bit longer, as I'd like to hear more for some of these characters and what you think they'd do against individual threats in the tier they were countering. However overall it was a great strategy guide. I really enjoyed it, especially with all the characters I knew and with the surprisingly elegant simple countering to such a daunting looking verse.

  3. Darkstalkers just seems like a really cool fighting game series in a way that it feels like a melting pot of horror and monster tropes. I think this is the first time that I read about all of the verse’s fighters, and it legitimately seems like it would be a really fun game to play.

The city tier seems tough to counter from the get-go. You already have to deal with time travel on top of other things like madness inducement, mind control, and transmutation (Anakaris really does seem like quite the wild card). I liked seeing Homura a lot, and her respective time abilities seem like a perfect counter; it was also pretty clever to get around transmutation with her soul gem. Ratchet & Clank was a nice surprise, but with how versatile their moveset is they seem like they would make for a great counter in general. Also cool that you could get Ai Enma to work despite the massive stat differences.

The planet tier had a lot of cool sounding characters; I think my personal favorite of the one’s you described are Huitzil, the Mayan robot that killed the dinosaurs, and the disturbing insectoid fighter Q-Bee (though my opinion may change if I played the game). It also sounds hard to counter, with stuff like soul manipulation, so it’s surprising to learn how far skill will get you (I guess that’s fighting games for ya :P). Karin is probably my favorite of the characters mentioned as counters, and I think her skill, hard to get through shields, and danmaku takes down the tier nicely. Obi-Wan and Litchi were also neat to see and I like seeing you use a foresight strategy (with the Force sensing and Litchi’s future sight) to counter that particular tier.

And finally the Galaxy tier. First off, Flying Dutchman is my favorite counter in this whole thing and I love how you described him as a shinigami haha. Soul manipulation, transmutation, possession, spacetime manipulation–he really does have everything to counter. And I simply love the mental image of FD embarrassing Jedah with his abilities. Also love the point that his sealing is potent enough to be stronger than the metafictional powers of SpongeBob. Other than that I like seeing Chakravartin and his manipulation of the Samsara cycle to counter Jedah. Also, Amazo reminds me a lot of August from Fairy Tail in his strategy, and it’s not often to see a fighter copy moves from such a wide variety of sources from Biological to technological.

    Overall, fantastic job.

  4. Aw yeah, Darkstalkers! This was the strategy guide of yours I was most looking forward to out of the October batch. Me and fighting games don't jive well, but I've always loved the aesthetic and character designs of this franchise and a monster mash is such a brilliant theme for a fighter. I've been curious about the verse for a long while, and today my curiosity has been sated! The first tier's already looking tricky 'cause each character brings such a different variety of powers to plan around. Very, very good point mentioning their range limitations, as expected of a fighting game fan such as yourself! Homura's time stop is really OP here, something that'll come up later as well. Ratchet & Clank are my favorite counter for this tier, because I love how they make up for the stat difference with their arsenal of fantastic weapons and surprising resistances. I'm not sure if they've ever got to fight a Darkstalkers character in any of those crossover fighting games out there, but I think it'd be a real blast having them duke it out fighting game style! It was great seeing Ai again so soon after I read your awesome blog featuring her and she is the definition of OP at this tier, basically winning just by showing up. Really digging that point you made about her having a lot of the most powerful abilities of this tier without any vulnerability to them.

Second tier, wow that jumped up! It's really hard for me to pick a favorite counter here, you made some really fantastic picks! Litchi being able to solo the good old fashioned way, with insta-kill moves, immunities and incredible skill, being able to become greatly informed in the blink of the eye in any battle, oh man. All of that shows she's so much more than a very pretty face; she's OP! And Obi-wan, man, the stuff from Legends makes him so powerful. Really liked your idea about mind tricking the bees, as it not only works on creatures less intelligent than humans, it works even better! Force-based TK is perfect for spacing and once they get in close, hoo boy, the dude would be untouchable. But then there's Karin and yeah, I'm thinking by this point I've pretty much made up my mind and chose a fave counter lol. It's like playing on god mode, Karin's too OP for this tier to possibly deal with. I like that you brought up her sealing too, that's a very effective trick.

    1. Seeing you counter Jedah Dohma was one of the things I most wanted to see in this whole blog, and you totally delivered! It was interesting to see each of the super strong Darkstalkers characters at this tier had their own specific weaknesses. Said weaknesses sounded varied enough that I wasn't sure if someone could take advantage of all of 'em at the same time but hoo boy, did you prove me wrong! Chakravartin is SUCH a great counter to Jedah's incredibly BS version of regeneration! Very well done. And the same mastery over the cycle of life and death could screw over the rest of the verse too. Or if he wanted more specific solutions, that possession hax gives him access to everything in Darkstalkers. But someone who does that even better is Amazo (awesome art for him btw). This is one of the strongest characters based around a copying ability that I've ever seen! The way he could snowball here would be nuts; he'd be able to solo the verse even if he didn't show up with the powers he's copied from DC. Fantastic suite of resistances and immunities too. Amazo would be my fave counter for this tier if it wasn't for your final, ultimate counter which blew me away. This was such an incredible surprise and so fitting for Halloween! A shinigami to defeat a shinigami? I can't believe it's the Dutchman! I have such newfound respect for the green ghost, and I already liked the guy. He's so much more broken than I could've dreamed! The way his power can unravel anything in this tier and this verse, rendering any opposition powerless, is truly OP. He can travel dimensions far more adeptly than anyone here and the fact that he can even overpower his own sealing is nuts. This was the perfect ending to this blog, thank you so much Thor! The spooky season is continuing in style. Looking forward to finding out which one of the guides is next!
